- Harriet Ellen Williams, age 95, died peacefully on February 8, 2016 at Whitehorse Village. Harriet was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was a graduate of Michigan State University. Harriet worked for the Red Cross throughout WWII and she was the first woman to pass the U.S. Civil Service Examination for air traffic control. Harriet was the wife of the late Burton L. Williams. They lived for many years in Rose Valley, PA where they raised their family.
Harriet continued her service with the Red Cross for over 50 years in Philadelphia and Chester. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Swarthmore where she served on the Altar Guild. Harriet also volunteered at the Helen Kate Furness Library for many years. Harriet loved gardening, playing bridge and the orchestra. She was a member of Twin Creek Gardeners and the Rose Valley Folk.
Harriet is survived by her children, Burton J. Williams of Aston, PA; David B. Williams of Media, PA; and Carolyn W. Ciocca of Memphis, TN. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Tom, Doug, Robert, Kimberly, John and Natalie.
A Memorial Service will be held 2 pm Saturday, Feb. 13, at Trinity Episcopal Church. 301 N. Chester Rd. Swarthmore, PA 19081. Friends may call from 1:30 - 2 pm.
