Notes |
- Janet Lucile Thompson (Williams) passed away at home in Porter Hills Village on January 23rd. She was born on December 15, 1928 in Grand Rapids to the late Wilfred Williams and Emily Castle Williams. Everett, her husband of 65 years, preceded her in death last year. Following graduation from Grand Rapids Central High School she attended Rockford College and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Home Economics and Child Development. It was at Michigan State that she met and married Everett. They started married life in Mt. Pleasant and St. Johns, and moved to Grand Rapids in 1957, living in Cascade. Janet cherished family life, not only with her children and grandchildren but also with her nieces and nephews and their families. There are many shared memories of sitting at her dinner table with a large family group telling stories and laughing. Janet was a long time volunteer in the community. She and Everett were members of Ada Congregational Church for over 60 years, where Janet was very active serving on the Trustee Board and teaching Sunday school. In the early years, Janet was instrumental in starting what is now the Ada Village School. One of her passions was literacy. Janet was one of the founding leaders of the Cascade Township Library and the old Cascade Library. Later in life she and Everett volunteered helping young children with their reading at East Leonard Elementary School. She was a long time member and board member of Women?s City Club of Grand Rapids, Women?s Literary Club and Guild of Blodgett Hospital where she also served as a volunteer in the gift shop for 25 years. Together with Everett, she had numerous adventures traveling the world, often with life long friends. Janet will be lovingly remembered by her sister (Harriet Williams), her children Doug (Alix) Thompson, Ginny (Andy) Rundquist, Bruce (Brenda) Thompson and Laura Thompson (daughter-in-law), and grandchildren Tara (Carol) Thompson, Jeff (Nathalie) Thompson, Steve Thompson, Emily Shachter, Ben Shachter, Cameron Thompson and Max Thompson. Her husband Everett, son Dan Thompson, brother Ted, and sister Carolyn preceded her in death. Visitation will be held at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, January 29th. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 30th at Ada Congregational Church, 6330 Ada Dr. SE, Ada, MI 49301 with Reverend Gary Burdick officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Janet?s name to the ?Friends of Cascade Library?. The family would like to thank the Spectrum Health Hospice team and the Porter Hills staff for their loving support.
