- Marshal E. "Mark" Kik Richland Marshal E. "Mark" Kik, age 52, of Richland, MI, Police Chief for Barry Township, died on Wednesday, June 10, 2009. Mark was born on July 27, 1956 in Saginaw, MI and was the son of Dr. Richard and Betty M. (Jackson) Kik, II. He was the Police Chief for Barry Township of Barry County for the past 29 years. Mark was a member of the Professional Police Officers Association (P.P.O.A.) and an active member of the Barry County and Kalamazoo County Water Recovery Teams. His passion was scuba diving which coincided with his other employment since 1980, at Sub-Aquatic Sports and Service in Battle Creek and his expert knowledge of lobsters and sharks. Mark also worked security details at the Gilmore Car Museum of Hickory Corners. But, above all else, his family and fellow officers were his true passions. On September 20, 1986 in Kalamazoo, MI, Mark was united in marriage to the former, Sherri A. Siskaninetz and she survives. Also, surviving is his mother, Betty M. Kik of Richland; his brother, Richard (Marilyn) Kik, III of Richland; his parents-in-law, Paul (Betty) Siskaninetz of Lawton, MI; his sister-in-law, Sandy (Ken) DeMann of Martin, MI; three nieces, Rebekah Kik, Kathryn (Andrew) Kik-Green and Nicole DeMann; three nephews, Kenneth (Angela Bailey) Kik, Richard (Rebecca) Kik, IV and Jeffrey (Fiance, Trisha Cook) DeMann; several great nieces and nephews; best friend for 50 years, Dennis J. Cox and Rick and Kim Sass, the owners and operators of Sub-Aquatic and his faithful and his ever present, companion, Marni Mae, his Dog. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Richard Kik, II on September 20, 2005. At the request of his family, friends may call on Sunday, June 14th from Noon until 8:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home-Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Avenue, 49083. The funeral service to celebrate Mark's life will be held on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Richland Bible Church, 8643 Gull Road. The Honorary Law Enforcement Procession will proceed to Mark's office in Delton, MI immediately following the funeral service. Cremation will follow his funeral service and his cremated remains will be scattered at his favorite diving locations. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mark's honor may be made to your local Animal Rescue Shelter.

- BARRY COUNTY -- Marshal "Mark" Kik, the longtime police chief of Barry Township, shot and killed himself shortly after he showed up for work this morning, police said.
Kik, 52, was found behind the police station on East Orchard Street, near Delton. Sheriff Dar Leaf was with the chief's widow and family this afternoon.
Sheriff's deputies had responded to a 7 a.m. request to check the chief's welfare when they found his body behind the police station, Undersheriff Robert Baker said.
He would not specify precisely what led police to check on the chief. Police said it was apparent Kik died of self-inflicted injuries.
Baker said the loss would be difficult for many. Kik, who served the department nearly 30 years, was widely known in law-enforcement circles as well as the community.
"He was well-liked and respected and known throughout the county, not just in this township, but the county, and he will be missed," Baker said. "It's a hard time for everybody."Township supervisor Wesley Kahler said Kik became chief 29 years ago, just months after he joined the department.
"Mark will be sadly missed by the Barry Township board and the entire community," he said in a statement. "Mark was truly part of this community. Our heart-felt prayers and thoughts go out to Mark's family at this very sad time."
