Mary Day Mills was born on Nov. 14, 1930 in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Miles M.(b: 1901) and Marian Mills (b: 1903). In 1933 the family moved to Des Moines, where Mary attended Greenwood School, Callanan Junior High School and Roosevelt High School, where she graduated in 1948. She attended Frances Shimer College in Mount Carroll, Ill. and Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. before graduating from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in sociology in 1952. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
In 1953 Mary married William R. Hornaday, Jr.(Dr. William R. Hornaday Jr., MD) and in 1961 they moved to Des Moines, where Mary helped her husband start his urology practice, reared two children and devoted her time to a variety of charities and civic endeavors. She brought her exemplary leadership skills and commitment to service to the Des Moines Junior League, the United Way of Central Iowa and the Des Moines Science Center. She served twice on the board of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa, and on the vestry of St. Pauls. In the 1980s, she was instrumental in the preservation of the Sylvan Theater in Greenwood Park.
Mary was a woman of unbounded energy, especially on the tennis court, where she excelled. She loved traveling, gardening, watching the birds outside her kitchen window, solving puzzles and playing cards "pitch, cribbage and bridge being her games of choice. She was devoted to a succession of family and neighborhood dogs, but her chief love in life was people. She will be remembered and missed by the many relatives and friends who often joined her over a cocktail or a few of her beloved Hydrox cookies and a glass of milk, to enjoy lively "and often colorful" conversation. To all who knew and loved her, Mary was a woman of uncommon zest, kindness, generosity and acerbic wit.
Mary Hornaday is survived by her husband, William R. Hornaday, Jr. and her brother, Miles M. Mills, Jr., both of Des Moines; her son, William R. Hornaday III, of Denver; her daughter-in-law, Martha B. Hornaday, of Denver; her daughter, Ann Hornaday Greenia, of Baltimore; her son-in-law Dennis F. Greenia, of Baltimore; grandsons William R.
