- Joseph J. Femia, 81, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at the Summit of Plantsville. He was the beloved husband of Emma (Schuster) Femia, his loving wife of 33 years.
Born in Meriden Dec. 5, 1928, he was the son of the late John and Carmella (Barbuto) Femia. A longtime resident of Meriden, Joseph attended local schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. A Southington resident for the past 32 years, he was a parishioner of Mary Our Queen Church of Plantsville. Joseph was employed by the International Silver Co. for over 35 years where he was a foreman. The last 10 years of his career were spent at Northeast Utilities. Joseph enjoyed reading, word puzzles and gardening. He loved spending time with his family especially his many nieces, nephews and grandchildren, to his grandchildren he was affectionately known as "Grandpa Joe."
Besides his wife Emma, Joseph is survived by his son, James Miner, of Southington; his daughter, Gail Howes and her husband, Floyd, of Saco, Maine; a brother, Robert Femia and his wife, Josephine, of Meriden; two sisters, Dolores Schmidt, of Middletown, and Ann Branningan, of Meriden; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Longo, of Meriden, John Schuster, of Southington; a sister-in-law, Jean Femia, of Meriden; two grandchildren, Lee Ann Howes and Kathy Bergeron, both of Saco, Maine; five great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Richard, Alisha, Ashley, Christopher; and two great-great grandchildren, Lillian and Cameron. Joseph was predeceased by two brothers, Dominic Femia and Anthony Femia; and three sisters, Catherine Longo, Mary Rossi and Theresa Tedesco.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 10:15 a.m. from the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m., at Mary Our Queen Church, 248 Savage St., Plantsville. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects Tuesday (TODAY) from 3 until 7 p.m., at the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home.
