- Gertrude C. Bardwell, 93, former Whately postmaster and formerly of 200 Chestnut Plain Road, died Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, in Overlook at Northampton.
She was born in South Hadley, Feb. 3, 1916, the daughter of George and Clara (Ryder) Haskell. Gert was educated in South Hadley schools and graduated from South Hadley High School. In early years, she worked in a South Hadley Laundromat. She later worked on a farm for Howard Waite.She was named Whately postmaster in 1959 and retired from that post in 1981.
Gertrude was married to Charles Bardwell on July 1, 1939 in South Hadley. They made their home in Whately. Charles predeceased her in 1991.
She was a member of the Ladies Benevolent Society, the Whately Grange 441, Whately Historical Society and was a member of the Whately Congregational Church for over 50 years.
She is survived by three nieces: Linda Kaiser and her husband Ward of Shelburne Falls, Gertrude Gimby of Haverhill and Betty Porter and her husband Warren of Southington, Conn.; three nephews, Wesley Dickinson and his wife Rosita of South Deerfield, Robert Haskell and his wife Alice of Cheshire, Conn., and Laurent Granger and his wife Vivian of Fairview; several grandnieces and gradnephews.
She was predeceased by one brother, John Haskell, and two sisters, Eleanor Granger and Dorothy Dickinson.
Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. in the Whately Congregational Church with the Rev. Cynthia Crosson-Harrington, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Whately Center Cemetery.
A calling hour at the church will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Whately Historical Society, c/o Lois Bean, Webber Road, or Whately Congregational Church, c/o Virginia Allis, Haydenville Road, both in Whately, MA 01093.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wrisley Funeral Home, South Deerfield.
