- Dean E. Zanni, 89, of Bokum Rd., Old Saybrook, died Monday, (August 18, 2003) at Middlesex Hospital. He was the husband of Althea (Stewart) Zanni for 26 years. He was born in Old Saybrook on Feb 7, l9l4, son of the late John B. and Natalie (Zanni) Zanni. He was a lifelong resident of Old Saybrook and was a sea captain for the Cross Sound Ferry. He was a Navy veteran and then a Coast Guard Veteran of World War II and a Merchant Marine Captain. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two daughters: Shirley James of Needles, CA, and Claudia Way of Old Saybrook; his brother, John Zanni of Riverton, UT; and sister, Doris Maas of Chester; five grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; his three stepsons: Edward Collatz of California, Howard Herman of Idaho, and Jack Herman of Pennsylvania; two step grandsons, and a step granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Frances Chapman, his two brothers, Claude Zanni and Silvo Zanni, and two sisters: Esther Varolo, and Elvera Ackerman. A memorial service will be held on Sat., Aug 30, 11 a.m. at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St., Centerbrook. Burial private. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Old Saybrook Ambulance Assoc.
