- Latham (Lay) N. Fitch, 86, of DeLand, FL, most previously from Kissimmee, FL, passed away Wednesday January 9, 2008. Latham was born in New York City in 1921 to Rev. Elmer B. and Ione Reynolds Fitch. He attended Nyack Missionary Training Institute, Nyack, NY (now Nyack College) in 1939-1942 and was enrolled in Houghton College, Houghton, NY when he enlisted into the army in 1942. He attained rank of Master Sgt. and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He graduated from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA in 1947 and received his masters from the University of Pittsburgh. He married Frances Pearl Hughes, his wife of 60 years, in 1947. He was in public education for 30 years beginning his teaching career at South Heights, PA, then teaching at the Lutheran Children's Home in Zelienople, PA. He was then the principal at Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School for 20 years in Zelienople, PA. In 1981 he and his wife moved to Orlando, FL where they lived for 14 years. The last 12 years they lived at the Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, FL. Latham was involved with lay preaching and music his entire adult life. Latham is survived by his wife, Frances Hughes Fitch of DeLand, FL; one son, R. Neal Fitch (and wife Janet Fitch) of Tallahassee, Fl., two grandchildren, Michael N. Fitch of Tallahassee, FL, and Laura A. Gatlin (and husband Artie) of Deltona, FL. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. Elmer Fitch and Reginald Fitch.
