- John Chester Bogus, Sr., 72, of South Yarmouth, MA, entered into peace Thursday, (February 6, 2003) at his home after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. He was born December 16, 1930, in Hartford, and raised in Tariffville, attending Simsbury Schools. John was an outstanding athlete in three sports at Simsbury High School. He was active in baseball, coaching little league, Babe Ruth and the Hartford current Leagues. Mr. Bogus was an Army veteran of the Korean War from 1952-1954; he was in the battle for Christmas Hill. John was an avid golfer and bowler, and loved the Red Sox. Mr. Bogus retired in 1985 from his work of 33 years as a pattern maker at the Connecticut Foundry in Rocky Hill. John also worked in the Plainfield, Foundry and Westfield, MA Foundry for an additional seven years. In 1997, he and his wife moved from Simsbury to Cape Cod to enjoy their retirement. John was the shuttle driver at Bayberry Hills Golf Course for four years. He leaves behind many close friends. John was a member of the retired Men's and Bowling Clubs. Beloved husband of Alice (Babbitt) Bogus of South Yarmouth for 51 years. Father of John C. Bogus, Jr. and his wife, Holly of Forestdale, Peter L. Bogus of Edenton, NC and Jeffrey H. Bogus and his wife, Michele of Stowe, VT. His four grandchildren also survive him, Amy, Stephanie, Joshua and Cory. Two sisters also survive him. A funeral will be held on Saturday, February 8, 9 a.m. from the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, a Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, Station Ave, South Yarmouth, MA. Interment will be in Chandler Gray Cemetery, West Yarmouth, MA. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to Davenport-Mugar Cancer Center or Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod.
