- John David Doolittle, 78, of Middletown and Hobe Sound, FL, beloved husband of Patricia (Dortch) Doolittle for fifty-four years, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 29th, 2014 in Florida.
Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Burton and Dorothy (Deane) Doolittle.
John graduated Avon Old Farms Prep School in 1954, Babson College, Wellesley, MA in 1957 and New England Institute in Boston, MA in 1958.
He joined the funeral business in 1959 with his father as third generation of Doolittle Funeral Home and went on to open Cromwell Funeral Home in 1969. He retired in 1996 as his son entered as fourth generation. J
John was a lifelong resident of Middletown and Cromwell spending winters in Florida after retiring.
He was a member of Stuart Congregational Church in Stuart, FL and First Congregational Church in Middletown where he served as a former Deacon and Trustee.
He was also a former member of the Cromwell Lions Club, member and past president of the Middletown Exchange Club and former member of the Board of Trustees of City Savings Bank, now Citizens Bank.
He served on the Board of Long Rivers Council, BSA, the Board of Directors for Pine Grove Cemetery, was a lifetime member of Cromwell Historical Society, a Corporator of Middlesex Hospital and active in the United Way and many other charities.
John spent much of his free time following the New York Yankees with a vengeance. He also enjoyed traveling, golfing, playing cards, had a love for fireworks and spending time with his family.
John touched so many people throughout his life. He was always willing to help anyone, whether he knew them or not and had an unending supply of hugs for everyone. He was a good friend to people, a loving husband and father, and a very involved grandfather. John was a wonderful, generous and kind man who will be truly missed by those he touched.
Along with his wife, he is survived by his son, Jay B. Doolittle and his wife, Donna of Middletown; two daughters, Suzanne Beauchemin of Cromwell and Cynthia L. Schloss and her husband, David of Cromwell; a sister, Barbara Rasch and her husband, John of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Jessica Doolittle and her fiancé, Jerry Parris, Jonathan Doolittle and his wife, Lindsey, Nikole Doolittle, Alexa and David Beauchemin, and Lily and Tyler Schloss; two great grandchildren, Gracie and Maddelena Doolittle; several nieces and nephews and his card buddies, golf buddies and many friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Burton and Richard Doolittle.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 4th at 10:00 am at Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown.
Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Family and friends may call on Monday evening from 5:00 to 8:00pm.
