Notes |
- Joseph ?Joe? Kane Jr., 90 of Spearfish passed away May 21, 2016, at the Belle Fourche Healthcare Center.
Joe Kane was born April 8, 1926, and raised in St. Paul, MN. When he was 17 he enlisted in the Navy during WWII. He served his country in the Pacific on a battleship, and was later stationed in Japan after the war. He moved to Spearfish after getting out of the Navy, and never stopped giving back to his community. While living in Spearfish, he was active in the VFW and the Knights of Columbus as a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church. He worked as a familiar milkman back in the 50?s and 60?s, and even spent several years with the Spearfish Police Department as an officer. He remained a city employee doing various jobs until his retirement.
After ?retirement? from the City of Spearfish, he may be best known for being a crossing guard on Jackson near East Elementary School. He helped thousands of people over the years, from helping save lives to making sure a child could safely cross a busy four-lane street on the way to school.
Joe is survived by his youngest son, Dick (Susan) Kane from Delaware, and step-daughters, Jean Kirkpatrick-Kane from New Jersey, and Sharon Kirkpatrick-Sanchez (Paul Sanchez) from Whitewood, SD. Joe had nine grandchildren, spread between New Jersey, Delaware, Minnesota and Wisconsin, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice; son Ron; first wife, Gail; brother, Fred; and sister, Sally.
A memorial has been established to benefit the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Vigil services will be held at 7pm, Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10am, Friday, May 27, 2016 at the church, followed by burial at Black Hills National Cemetery.
