- Fred L. Emerson Jr.
Avid Rower Called `Patron Saint Of Crew'
June 05, 1992 - Hartford Courant
Fred L. Emerson Jr. of Lyme, an avid rower who founded and financed crew programs at more than 60 high schools, colleges and private clubs throughout the nation, died Monday in New London. He was 81.
In Connecticut, Mr. Emerson launched rowing programs at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College in New London, and he donated equipment and financial support to crew teams at Trinity College in Hartford and Wesleyan University in Middletown.
Almost every regatta in the Northeast at the high school and college level has at least one trophy bearing his name, and the annual crew race between Trinity and Coast Guard is named the Emerson Cup. On the underside of a bridge at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, site of many college and high school races, there is a message visible only to only the rowers who pass beneath it: "Fred Emerson is the patron saint of crew." Mr. Emerson helped high school rowing programs in East Lyme, Old Lyme and Deep River, and he supported preparatory school crew programs at Kent, Pomfret and Choate. When Mr. Emerson started the Coast Guard program more than 20 years ago, he donated most of the equipment, paid the coaches' salaries and underwrote the travel costs.
Mr. Emerson was a member of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Committee and the National Women's Olympic Rowing Committee, and shells he donated can be found at almost every major regatta in the country. Despite his generosity, Mr. Emerson was a private man, but to many, he was the father of rowing.
Mr. Emerson leaves his wife, Gertrude; three sons, Fred L. Emerson III of Hollywood, Calif., James D. Emerson of Miami, Fla., and Eric E. Emerson of Dallas; and a daughter, Annabelle Brown of McKinney, Texas.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Lyme on Route 156 in Hamburg. Burial will be private in Pleasant View Cemetery in Lyme. The Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home of Old Lyme, is in charge of arrangements. There are no calling hours.
Gifts may be made in Mr. Emerson's memory to a charity of the donor's choice, or to any high school, college or community rowing program.
