- Richard David Kotecki Sr., 74, of New London, died on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.
Born July 31, 1935, in Norwich, he was the son of the late Charles Kotecki and Sophie (Pureda) Kotecki.
He was the husband of Barbara (Hamler) Kotecki, whom he married on Nov. 27, 1954, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in New London.
He was employed by City Of New London for 34 years as a truck driver as well as a custodian. Richard proudly defended workers rights throughout his employment with the City of New London serving for over 30 years as president of Local 1378 of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) which represents public work employees throughout the city. He also served as an officer for the Southeastern Connecticut Labor Council. Richard dedicated his life to public service working on all of the many Charter Revision Commissions for the City of New London throughout the past 25 years. Most recently he assisted as a member of the City of New London Water Commission. Richard's previous associations included membership with the City's Democratic Town Committee as well as a member of the City of New London's Affirmative Action Committee.
Richard's hobbies included fishing with his sons and cooking breakfast every Sunday morning for his family. He also enjoyed working in his garden and was always willing to share its generous bounty with friends and family.
In addition to his beloved wife of 54 years, he is survived by his loving sons, Richard David Kotecki Jr. of Griswold, Jeffrey Kotecki of Niantic, Greg Kotecki of Ledyard, and David Kotecki of Quaker Hill; a brother, Charles Kotecki of Ledyard; a sister, Delores "Dee" Thorp; six grandchildren, three step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
The funeral will assemble at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London and proceed to St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Huntington St., New London, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Jefferson Ave., New London. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London.
