- Harold N. ?Pistol Pete? MacFarland, 84, of Link Rd., Rome, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born on February 20, 1927, in Rome, the son of Roy and Elsie Barden MacFarland. He was a graduate of Camden Central Schools, Class of 1943. On December 21, 1949, Pete was united in marriage to Marie Lewis in St. Patrick?s Church, Taberg. Mrs. MacFarland passed away on May 4, 2000.
Pete was a professional Major League Baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and the Rome Colonels from 1944-1950. In 1950, Pete was hired by the Rome State School because they needed a pitcher. Pete was later the supervisor for the Rome State School for thirty-five years.
Pete was an associate member of the Lee American Legion and a former member of Rome Moose Lodge.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Bruce Underwood, Christine and Richard Maskell, and Bernice and Doug Beckwith, all of Lee; a son, Dale MacFarland, of Blossvale; eleven grandchildren, Michael, Monica, Tara, Brooke, Richie, Amanda, Taj, Molly, Holly, D.J., and Amanda; eight great-grandchildren, Kylee, Kaycee, Derek, Morgan, Guiliana, Gavin, Savanna, and Keegan; and several nieces and nephews. Pete was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara; and two brothers, Donald and Lynn.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, at 5:00 PM with the Rev. Edward Veaudry officiating. Interment will take place in St .Patrick?s
