- MARQUARDT _ William John. Bill was born in a log cabin in northern Alberta on March 19th, 1917. Later Bill and his parents, William and Caroline, homesteaded near Artland Sask. where Bill learned to farm, fish and hunt. At 19, the eldest of six children, Bill left the farm with a Grade 8 education to study diesel engineering in Los Angeles. In 1937 he traveled to northern Ontario to work in the mining and forest industries. While completing his Senior Matriculation at night in Vancouver in 1940, Bill worked as a riveter on Hawker Hurricanes for Boeing on Sea Island. He enlisted in the army in 1942 where in three years stationed in BC he achieved the rank of Sergeant in the dental corps. In a Vancouver garage in 1947 Bill started an electro-plating shop which grew to be Hudson Plating Co., a business which now has two plants and over 50 employees. Hudson Plating started the first powder coating plant in BC and owes much of its success to long-term, dedicated employees. Bill married Louise Dewar in 1947. Together they successfully grew the plating business, raised four children and spoiled grandchildren. In 1978 Bill joined the Rotary Club where he made many lasting friends and visited Clubs world wide. As Chapter President he presided at the grand opening of a Rotary-built community centre and clinic in rural Thailand. Bill loved fishing, hunting, world travel, wine making, playing cards, socializing with friends and neighbours, and visiting Maui annually. He loved his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed hosting friends and his large family at the cabin on Skaha Lake. He is well known for his wonderful waffles and wine cooler, his prodigious memory and his 1001 wacky sayings. He passed away with his wife and children at his side on July 19th, 2006 under the excellent care of the Doctors and staff at Burnaby General. Bill was predeceased by his brothers Ed (1944) and Alf (1969), his sister Dorothy Smibert (2003) and his son-in-law Robert Yeo (1999). He is survived by Louise, his loving wife of 59 years, his sister Esther Cain (Ray) and brother George (Lil), his 4 children and 14 grandchildren: Don (Trenna - Briana, Conrad), Carol Yeo (Roberta), John (Sandy - Darcy, Kate, Jenny, Danny, Mike), Doreen Mckinnon (Dave - Chris, Emily, Claire, Peter, Hannah, Matthew); and extended family Pat Whyte (Dale - Ryan, Sean, Justin, Tyson). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's memory to the Salvation Army. There will be a memorial service at Ocean View Burial Park at Imperial and Patterson in Burnaby at 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 25th, 2006.
