- Loren J. Lewis, age 83, passed away peacefully Friday, January 11, 2008 at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Loren was born January 10, 1925 in Bath, a son of Chester & Eva (Poole) Lewis. He married Doris Cleveland on September 4, 1948 in Cohocton; she survives. Loren worked at Stone Conveyor for 15 years and retired from Taylor Wine Co. He was the Police Chief for the Town of Cohocton for many years as well as a grounds keeper at the Wayland Cohocton Central School, Cohocton Campus for many years.
Loren was a life member of the Cohocton Fire Dept., a member of the Cohocton Methodist Church, the Ontario & Steuben County Sheriffs Association, a former member of the Richmond Fire Dept. and the Canadice Methodist Church.
He enjoyed camping, gardening, bowling and watching golf on television, but most of all he loved spending time with his loving family & friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Doris; their children, Alan (Ruth) Lewis of Cohocton and Lorna (Jeff) Foster of Rochester; 8 grandchildren, Tami (Justin) VanMeeteren, Ashley Smith, Tristan Foster, Adam Collmer, Richard Wilson, Joseph Wilson & Brandi Wilson;
2 great granddaughters, Katy Rose VanMeeteren & Hannah Wilson; his sister, Betty (Jerry) Ballou of Houston, TX; his brothers, Erwin (Marian) Lewis of Wheeler and Merklee Lewis
of Prattsburgh; sisters-in-law, Ruth Cragg, Sally Wheaton & Ruby Cleveland; brother-in-law, John Cleveland; nieces & nephews, Ronald & Karen Wheaton, Elaine Burritt, John & Alison Cleveland, Judy Meyers, Nancy Lewis, Chester Lewis, Annette Martin, Dale Lewis, Linda Rice, Douglas Lewis, Larry Switzer, Gary Jimmerson, Lyle Jimmerson & Earl Jimmerson; great nieces & great nephews Michelle & William Margeson, Richard & Kim Burritt, Taylor Wheaton & Malory Wheaton and many cousins.
Friends may call 2-4 & 6-8 pm, Sunday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, (new location) 300 West Naples St., Wayland, where funeral services will be held 11 am, Monday with Rev. Karen Porch officiating. Burial will be in Mapleview Cemetery, Cohocton.
Contributions may be made to the Cohocton Fire Dept. or the Cohocton Methodist Church in memory of Loren J. Lewis.
