Robert Franklyn Passut of St. Johnsbury, 90, and most recently of The Canterbury Inn, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015, surrounded by his family.
Robert was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts, on Aug. 24, 1924, the son of Frederick and Marjorie (Robinson) Passut. He was predeceased by his first wife, Thelma (Royce) Passut, on Feb. 21, 1978, and his second wife, Benita (Boardman) Passut, on March 10, 2012. He also was sadly predeceased by two of his three sons; his oldest Blaine Bernard on May 5, 2011, and his youngest son Barry Robert on Jan. 14, 2013, and by his sister, Margery (Passut) Bean and her husband Benny Bean, of Lyndonville.
The majority of his working career was as a machinist with Fairbanks-Morse Co. from where he retired in 1989 after 40 years. At that time, he and Benita moved to Jensen Beach, Florida where he worked for Publix Super Markets.
He enjoyed his retirement wintering in Florida and spending his summers at their camp in Sutton North Ridge.
He is survived by his son Brent F. Passut and his wife Patricia (Davio) Passut of St. Johnsbury, daughter-in-law Pamela (Lacroix) Passut-Sanford of St. Johnsbury; eight grandchildren: Blaine's children Tracey (Billings) and Jeremy; Brent's children Jeffrey, Justin (partner Erin), and Jordan, Barry's children Tiffany (Danner), Timothy 'TJ', Nathan Leach and all their families; 10 great-grandchildren. He leaves the extended Boardman family members which include Jerry, Bonnie, Jane, Susan, David, Paul, Sheila, Ellen and James and their families which include 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Additional survivors also include former daughter-in-laws Dawn Beliveau and Kathy Dastalto, one niece Sharon (Bean) Dolloff and nephews Steven, David, Jeffrey Bean and families.
A special thanks goes to stepdaughters Susan Deslauriers for her calls every single night, and to Ellen Boardman for her special lunches and picnics, and to granddaughter Tracey for having her Bumpa up to the house for weekly meals.
Robert proudly served in the Army during World War II in the Italian campaign. He was a member of Company A of the 351st Infantry, Regiment T in the 88th Infantry Div. of the 5th Army. He later served in the Vermont National Guard and was called to duty during the Korean conflict.
Burial services with military honors will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in August at the family's discretion.
Memorial contributions may be directed to The Canterbury Inn, 46 Cherry St., St. Johnsbury.
Sayles Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
