- Bessie M. Kirkby, 96, of Cortland, NY passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Cortland Park and Rehabilitation Center. Bessie had previously lived on Peck Street in Evans Mills.
She was born May 16, 1917 in Clayton, NY, and was the daughter of the late Everton and Charlotte Cook Ayerst.
Bessie worked at the Borden's Cheese Factory in Antwerp, provided daycare to several families in Evans Mills for numerous years, and worked several years in the cafeteria at the Evans Mills Elementary School.
She loved her flower gardens, her church, cooking and her family. She enjoyed any opportunity for a picnic or party with her family. She was an extremely hard worker and enjoyed life to the fullest.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Northrop and Jeffrey Jesmer of Groton, NY; three grandsons, Sam and Michelle Northrop and their son, Jack, of Mechanicville, Ben and Caitlin Northrop of Fonda, and Jeffrey Northrop of Groton, NY; and sisters Rose Fleming of Mattydale, and Beatrice (George) Randall of Adams Center.
Her husband, Harry G. Kirkby, brothers, Albert and Lester Ayerst and a sister, Margaret Shultz predeceased her.
The funeral will be 1:30 pm Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Evans Mills with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Evans Mills.
Calling hours are 11 to 1 pm Friday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Evans Mills.
