      A Thanksgiving service for the life of Bishop Oliver Spencer Heyward was held at St Stephen's Church, Richmond, Victoria, on 18 December, 2003
      Bishop Philip Huggins, the Rector of St Stephen's Richmond, Victoria, where Bishop Oliver and his wife Peggy have worshipped for many years, conducted the service which was attended by many retired and active bishops and clergy as well as laity from around the country.
      Lessons were read by Sons Mark and Peter Heyward and Anna, Elle and Madeleine Heyward ,his grand daughters
      .Nicholas, the eldest son, in his eulogy thought back, remembering the many moves from one rectory to another at Sorrel and Richmond in Tasmania ;then Christ College, Hobart; and then to Bishopscourt ,in Bendigo, Victoria.
      Bishops Andrew Curnow, (Bishop of Bendigo) and Bishop John Stewart led the prayers.
      Bishop Keith Rayner, former Primate, preached the sermon, referring to Bishop Oliver's many interests outside the Anglican Church, Bishop Oliver had also been Assistant to the Primate for some years.
      Music was provided by members of Bishop Oliver's family and St Stephen's congregation.
      Following the Committal and Final Blessing pronounced by the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr Peter Watson, bishops and clergy formed a guard of honour along the path.
    • Oliver Spencer Heyward (16 March 1926 ? 15 December 2003)
      An Australian Anglican bishop: who was the sixth Bishop of Bendigo from 1975 to 1991. He was Assistant to the Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia (Bishop Keith Rayner) from 1991 to 1995. He was ordained at Ripon College Cuddesdon in 1954 and began his career with a curacy at St Peter, Brighton, England. Returning back to Australia he held incumbencies at Sorrell and Richmond, Tasmania After this he was Precentor at St David?s Cathedral, Hobart, then Warden of Christ College, University of Tasmania.. He was consecrated as Bishop of Bendigo in St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne on 1 February 1975.
      Oliver Spencer Heyward was born in Launceston, Tasmania and educated at Launceston Church Grammar School. He enlisted in the RAAF from 1944 to1946 then entered the University of Tasmania. In 1949 he won a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oriel College, Oxford, England. He married Peggy Maxwell Butcher daughter of Maxwell Gordon Butcher O. B. E. Aide de Camp to Ernest Clarke Governor of Tasmania.
