Born September 28, 1954, in Baltimore, Steve was the son of Joseph F. Hughes of Catonsville, Md., and the late Lillian M. Hughes. He was previously married to Angela Atkins, with whom he had three children, until their divorce in 1992.
Steve graduated from the Cardinal Gibbons High School in 1972, from UMBC with a degree in Economics in 1976, and from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1983. He worked as an Economist for the US Department of Labor until 1985 and then as an associate lawyer and then partner at Miles & Stockbridge in Baltimore. In 1993, he helped to form the law firm Treanor, Pope, and Hughes, currently in Towson, Md., where he was a well-renowned attorney representing people injured by medical negligence.
Steve was a Master Mason and the 2012 Junior Warden of the Maryland Palestine Lodge No.189 AF&AM in Catonsville, a former President of the Maryland Society for Justice, and a frequent speaker at legal seminars. He was a voracious reader, a critical thinker, as well as a masterful storyteller and humorist who enjoyed poker, golf, and attending Ravens' games. He also sang in a Beatles tribute band for 15 years. He was devoted to his children and grandchildren and gave freely of his time, support, and legal skills to family, friends, and those in need.
Surviving him, in addition to his father, are loving daughters Angela Hughes Brooks of Catonsville and Sarah Emily Pain of London, England; son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren Andrew S. and Erika E.
