Naomi passed from earth to Heaven on November 28, 2020. Naomi was born prematurely to William and Rose Hildebrand. Rose had several miscarriages prior to her pregnancy with Naomi. Naomi was set on the oven door until the pastor could arrive to baptize her, and then she was whisked off to the hospital where she stayed for three weeks. She grew up on a dairy farm in Shelbyville, Michigan. She attended a one-room schoolhouse and walked to school (reportedly uphill both ways). After a few years the schoolhouse closed and she attended Martin Public schools where she excelled in girl’s basketball, acted in school plays, worked on the newspaper, and met her first husband, Claude Smith.
After graduating high school, and unable to decide what her future career should look like, her cousin (Carl Brenner, who lived in Toledo, Ohio) told Naomi’s mother that St. Lukes Nursing School would pay her tuition to attend nursing school. She graduated with the great assistance of dear friends, especially Stella Nusbaum who coached her in chemistry. She’s shared several stories from her nursing school years -- from classes, to interning at St. Luke’s Hospital and Detroit Children’s hospital to hitchhiking because they missed the bus to school!
After graduating nursing school and a long-distance relationship with Claude Smith she and Claude were married. Although, just barely. Claude was supposed to come home on leave for his wedding but leave permission was touch and go at that time due to the Korean War. At the last minute he was finally allowed to travel from the Naval Ship Yard in Chicago home for their wedding at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hopkins, Michigan.
They relocated to Charleston, South Carolina. After a couple years in Charleston, they had their first son, Robert Smith. Claude finished his term in the Navy and they made their way to Farmington, Michigan. While in Farmington, Stephen was born, followed by Patricia. Claude and Naomi stepped outside the box and on faith, and with no construction experience to speak of, they purchased property in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and built the home where their youngest child, Edward, was born and Naomi resided for over 60 years.
Naomi was a stay at home mom enjoying all the things that mom’s do (PTL, Ladies Guild at church, a neighborhood card club, voting precinct worker for 40+ years, gardening, canning and more) until she was approximately 40 years old. At that time, she went back to work as a nurse at Bloomfield Hills Nursing Home and then spent the remainder of her nursing career at Pontiac General Hospital. About the same time, and 20+ years of marriage, she went back to nursing and her and Claude parted ways.
After raising four children/teens on her own, she met and fell in love with her second husband Gordon Rintoul (who has preceded her in death in 2010). They enjoyed traveling, gardening, church and many shared friendships.
Naomi was a devoted Lutheran. She was a 60-year member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Walled Lake, Michigan. Her children all attended St. Matthew Lutheran School. On Sunday morning she could be found in the same pew at church (we joked that there should be a plaque on that pew!) for as long as her body could support attending – and until covid-19 came along to restrict gatherings, including worship gatherings. At that time, and much to her dislike of computers, she began to participate via on-line services. Still not missing her Sunday worship. On Monday morning you would find her learning more about her Lord and socializing with the Prime Timers at Bible Study.
Naomi is one of those rare few that can trace friendships back to grade school, nursing school, and many other steps along the way. Neighbors have come and gone but she continuously maintained those long-term friendships for decades! Her especially close friend of nearly 60 years was Thisvi Steiger. William Butler Yeats summed up Naomi’s personality very nicely, “There are no stranger’s here, only friends I haven’t met yet.”
Naomi was preceded to heaven by her mother (Rose Hildebrand) and father (William Hildebrand). Naomi only had one sibling - Richard Hildebrand. Both he and his wife, Katherine Hildebrand have also gone on to heaven before her along with her oldest child, Robert Smith who suffered from multiple sclerosis and passed on in 2017.
Naomi is survived by her children: Stephen Smith, Patricia (Matthew/Butch) Milkovich, and Edward (Cindy) Smith.
She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren: Rachel (Jimmy) Dyal, Melissa (Willie) Eickenhorst, Kristina (Matt) Landrum, Matthew (Amber) Milkovich, Benjamin Milkovich, Jacob (Kelsey) Smith and Toree Smith.
Although she hasn’t had the same gift of time with her great-grandchildren, we know that they will be taught her love of and faith in Jesus. Those great-grandchildren are: Nate Eickenhorst, Aarilynn Serra, Anna Eickenhorst, Blake Dempsey, Chloe Serra-Milkovich, Lorelei Landrum, Herman Dyal, Levi Landrum, Scarlett Serra-Milkovich, and soon to be born Eleanor Ann Landrum.
While Naomi will be greatly missed, we have the assured faith of knowing that the heavenly banquet that she arrived to had to be magnificent. She was a blessing to so many people on this earth that God can only say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
Visitation will be from 4 pm to 5 pm, Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 2400 South Commerce Road, Walled Lake Michigan. Covid restrictions are in place (everyone must wear a mask).
Christian Service will also be at St. Matthew Lutheran Church on December 2, 2020, at 5 pm. Covid restrictions are in place (everyone must wear a mask).
Committal will be for family members only at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
