    Notes:

Emory Bailey is Victim of Farm Mishap
A Clay county youth, Emory Bailey, 20, became the first victim of a corn picking accident in Dickinson County history Monday morning when he died shortly after 9 a.m. after his arm was caught in a mechanical picker while he was working alone in the field of the Chris Schmidt farm about seven and a half miles south of Lake Park.
Bailey had been working with Schmidt and the latter took a load of corn from the picker to the crib, which he had been doing in about 15-minute intervals during the course of the work.
When he returned he saw the picker still running but standing still at a point near the end of a row. Schmidt went over to investigate and found the youth, still alive but unconscious, with his arm caught in the chain of the machine.
The youth died soon afterward before medical aid could be summoned. Dr. B. W. Jones of Spirit Lake, Dickinson County Coroner, said he thought death was due to loss of blood. Officials believe that the machinery became plugged with corn and the victim reached into the machinery to remove it without first stopping the machinery.

Emory Ira Bailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Bailey, was born at Royal, Iowa, Oct. 5, 1919, and passed away in Dickinson county, Iowa, Oct. 23, 1939, at the age of 20 years and 18 days.
The present farm north of Spencer has been his home since he was but a few months old. He attended the rural school here, and for three years was a student in Spencer High School. He was interested in farming and kindred activities; he was a diligent worker, and was prominent for several years in 4-H club organizational work.
His cheerful disposition endeared him to all, his diversity of interests brought him into contact with a wide circle of young people his own age, and he made many friends. The family circle will have a multitude of living memories, from this young man's wholesome life, as the years pass. They have the sincere sympathy of all.
There remain to mourn his intimely passing, the parents, six brothers and one sister, Frederick, Phoebe, Ralph, Ernest, Dale, Glen and Lester; a number of close relatives, and a wide circle of sincere friends.
A prayer service was conducted at the home Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock; and the funeral was held in the Spencer Church of Christ, at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. G. D. Serrill in charge, under the direction of the Cobb Funeral Home.
