JOSEPH KING
A former resident of Little Current Joseph King of St. Catharines died Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Hotel Dieu Hospital, St. Catharines following a brief illness. He was 73.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from Paul Funeral Chapel, Powassan, Ontario. Interment at Nipissing Cemetery.
Born, March 21, 1906 at Luther, Michigan. Mr. King was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. William King.
Mr. King was employed with the C.P.R. for 31 years and was a member of the senior citizens Club, St. Catharines, a member of the Orange Lodge at Little Current and a former member of the Little Current town council.
Mr. King is survived by his wife the former Thelma Allan whom he married Oct. 13, 1927 at North Bay, one son Gordon of Los Angeles and one daughter Mrs. Clayton (Norma) Taylor of Elliot Lake.
Also surviving are five brothers and four sisters, Simon and Daniel of Nipissing, George and Henry of Sudbury, John of Blind River; Mrs. Fred (Ruth Young of Powasson,: Mrs. Rufus (Ethel) Newbatt of Thunder Bay; Mrs. Richard (Florence)Busby of Iron Bridge and Mrs. Jean Yerkie of St. Catharines.
Ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren also survive.

Simon King - Simon was born in Nipissing, August 15, 1918, the youngest son of Anna (Perry) and William King. While logging in Port Loring he met Isabel Lambkins. The two were soon married and they settled their home near Nipissing. Over the years Simon worked in the logging camps for Odorizzis, Ellesmeres, Stephens and Duff Moore. After the breakdown of Simon's first marriage he married Evelyn Hummel. Together they ran a mink farm and Simon kept a small stable for work horses that he hired out. Through the years Simon became a trucker as he transported cattle, milk and gravel. He also handled a mail run, and trucked logs and pulp wood. Eventually the trucking took prominence and Simon bought his own rig. He served as a broker for such companies as Caustic, Kingsway, Motorway and Nickel City but over the 25 years he operated his truck he kept returning to Kingsway. His trucking was done mostly in Ontario. Throughout his life Simon liked to invest his money, and did so in various endeavours such as home construction, real estate and the stock market. He like to play cards and enjoyed his membership in the Golden Sunshine Club. He especially enjoyed the seniors dances. Simon had his own unique viewpoint on most everything and was free to share it! He was his own boss!

CURTIS, MI - Longtime Curtis, MI resident, Elsie May Metcalf, age 85, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2006 at the Helen Newberry Joy Annex in Newberry, MI.
She was born January 30, 1921 in Melstrand, MI the daughter of the late Robert and Ethel Smith and attended school there. She later graduated from Tahquamenon Area Schools.
In April of 1937, she married Robert W. Metcalf and they made their home in Curtis. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1971.
In addition to being a homemaker, Elsie was employed as a baker and also as a cook for the Curtis/Lakefield Senior Citizens Center for many years.
She was a member of the Curtis Free Methodist Church.
Survivors include; Lorraine Metcalf of Curtis, Glen (Linda) Metcalf of Engadine, Dale Metcalf of Germfask, Carolyn (Harry) Burton of Germfask, Phyllis Fahler of Newberry, Connie (Butch) Ward of Ortonville, Derryl Metcalf of Ortonville, Marilyn (Steve) Zellar of Germfask, Cindy Metcalf of Curtis, Sherry (Norm) Burton of Curtis, forty grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her sons, George Earl Metcalf, John Winslow Metcalf and Jerry Steven Metcalf; and a great granddaughter, Keisa Metcalf.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm, at the funeral home with Pastor Ron Oberle officiating.

Byrdie Rosetta (Atwood) Sarkees passed away on February 18, 2014, at the age of 99. Byrdie was the fifth child born to Frances Pearl Perry and George Richard Atwood on February 2, 1915 in Greenville, Michigan. Byrdie's mom joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1913 and Byrdie was baptized when she was nine years old. Byrdie enjoyed her association with the members of the church all her life. The Missionaries were always welcome in the Atwood home. When Byrdie was 22 years old she met and married the love of her life, Fred Sarkees. On September 9, 1937 Fred and Byrdie eloped and were married in Indiana. They enjoyed traveling the United States together with family and friends. In 1946 Fred and Byrdie purchased a dry-cleaning business in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For the next twenty-six years they worked sided by side. Working on alterations in the dry-cleaning business, Byrdie learned to sew. She discovered she liked sewing and became an expert seamstress. During the time they lived in the Grand Rapids area, Byrdie belonged to several bowling leagues. She loved to cook Syrian foods and enjoyed entertaining family and friends and playing cards. Byrdie and Fred sold the business and moved to Vero Beach, Florida, where they lived for twenty-eight years. With the warm weather the year round in Florida, Byrdie could most often be found working in her flower gardens around her home. Byrdie and Fred moved back to Grand Rapids shortly before Fred passed away on September 1, 1999 after 62 years of marriage. Byrdie's nearest living relatives consist of; sisters-in-law Lillian Atwood and Wedad Sarkees Lambert; Byrdie also leaves many second generation nieces and nephews. To mourn her loss she also leaves a lifelong friend Adel Wise. Those immediate family members who preceded Byrdie in death were her husband, Fred; her mother and father; brothers, Glen, Roy and Cliff; sisters, Violet and Gladys; nephews, Richard Armstrong and Harold Streeter; nieces Barbara Armstrong and Pauline Streeter. Funeral service for Byrdie will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2014 at Pederson Funeral Home, 127 N. Monroe Street, Rockford, MI 49341. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. ATWOOD (Rockford) - Mr. Clifford Atwood, age 79, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 4, 2003. Cliff was a member of Rockford Baptist Church, where he accepted Christ as his Savior in the early 60's and served there as Elder, Deacon, and an Awana Leader. For 13 years he worked for the Grand Rapids Police Department. Following retirement from the department, he bought the Sunoco Station at Fremont and Division Streets in Rockford and ran that from 1963-1976. For a while he ran the station and also worked for the Kent County Sheriff's Department, retiring from the department as Sgt in charge of road patrol. Cliff was a perfectionist when working with wood products and enjoyed remodeling and repair work. He was also an avid hunter, camper and fisherman. His family remembers Cliff modeling his life by Ephesians 5: 25. He is survived by his wife, Lillian (Dunn), who was his high school sweetheart and married her on June 21, 1944. Also surviving are his children, Dennis and Robin Atwood of Greenville, Gary and Nida Atwood of Rockford, Kathy and Ed Payton of Morley, Tim and Toni Atwood of Pierson and Doug and Sue Atwood of Howard City; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Byrdie Sarkees of Grand Rapids; sister- in-law, Mrs. Grace Atwood of Grand Rapids; nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his daughter, Terrill Louise Atwood, grandchildren, Timothy Dale Atwood, Anthony Roy Atwood and Dennis Michael Atwood, his parents and his step-mother, Mrs. Millie Atwood. The Mattawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), OPP Forensic Investigation Services (FIS), the North Bay Crime Unit and the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) have concluded their investigations into a fatal house fire in Mattawa from September 2, 2017. No foul play is suspected.
The deceased persons have been identified as Billy KING, age 74, and Roxanne LADOUCEUR, age 47, both of Mattawa.
A post-mortem examination was conducted in Toronto on September 5, 2017.

He worked in the Smelter as a Puncher for many years and then as a Skimmer, retiring in 1991 after working 41 years. He seldom missed a day's work over his long career. He was dedicated to his job and the company. The family recalls having summer vacations every year while they grew up, visiting family friends in Dansville, NY, Toronto Crystal Beach, and Nipissing visiting Uncle Daniel's Farm. He was the dear brother of Theresa Miller of Kingston, Mina Corrigan (late Gerard) of Edmonton, Kalvin Young (Bev) of Powassan, Steve Young (Gail) of Powassan, Frank Young (Kathy) of Powassan, Veronica McCutcheon (Mark) of Stroud and Helen Armstrong (Paul) of Bracebridge. He was predeceased by his siblings Phyllis McKenna, Lloyd Young (late Shirley), Jim Young (late Irene), and his former wife Theresa Gaudette. Lyle will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Lyle was a driller at INCO in Sudbury, for 33 years, retiring in 1991. Margaret "Mina-Ann" Corcoran Death Notice
On January 3, 2024, Margaret Mina-Ann Corcoran (nee Young) of Morinville, Alberta passed away at the age of 82 years.
Mina was born at home on the farm in South Himsworth, Ontario on July 26, 1941. She was the fifth child of 10 of Frederick and Ruth (King) Young.
She was married to Robert Gerard (Gerry) Corcoran on April 29, 1961 in St. Rose of Lima Church in Scarborough, Ontario. Mina and Gerry lived in Toronto until 1964 and then lived in Pickering, Ontario until 1975. At that time, they moved out west to Alberta. Gerry and Mina enjoyed living on a hobby farm in Gibbons, Alberta. They raised farm animals and horses. Mina loved gardening and had a large vegetable garden on the farm. She had a big heart and always welcomed the many friends and co-workers her husband and children would bring home for a visit and a meal. Mina also worked as a Supervisor at the Redwater IGA. Mina was very active in the Catholic Church. She was a CWL member for many years. She taught catechism and was an active volunteer in many organizations.
She loved hockey and was an avid fan of the Edmonton Oilers. Besides gardening, she loved cooking, arts and crafts and was known for her many beautiful earrings.
Mina will be remembered as a loving, caring person with a positive attitude. She was like a mother to many. Throughout her life, she was encouraging, generous and always thought of others rather than herself. She was a living example of Jesus? love and her family and friends were very blessed to have her in their lives.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, John, Michael (Annemarie), Paul (Cindy), Diane Kopp (Kevin), Mark (Elisa), grandchildren, Jessie, Kristina, Kyle, Brianne, Robert, Michelle, Gerard, Stuart, Tyler and great grandchildren, Kailey, Jayden and Chloé. She will also be missed by her siblings, Theresa,

Sister of First Victim Speaks Out About Rare Disease's Canadian Connection

It's a rare but life-threatening infection spread to humans by tiny ticks encountered in the woods or backyard gardens. And this summer, a Powassan virus health scare in the U.S. prompted a New York senator, American medical authorities and even the New York Times to warn of an urgent need for better research, prevention and treatment strategies to combat a pathogen that's on the rise 'perhaps due to climate change' throughout the Great Lakes region.

But the virus that grabbed headlines south of the border in August has a tragic Canadian connection that explains its name and still haunts a Northern Ontario family that, in 1958, suffered the sudden loss of a four-year-old son and brother from what was then an unknown infectious agent.

At the same time, however, the child's death gave science what remains its key weapon against the virus: a test developed by Canadian microbiologists to identify the deadly organism, which attacks the central nervous system and can cause fatal or crippling encephalitis 'brain swelling' in about 30 per cent of those who develop symptoms.

For more than 50 years, the first documented victim of the disease, a preschooler from Powassan, Ont., a small town about 20 kilometres south of North Bay, has been referenced only anonymously in medical reports and scientific journals. In keeping with privacy rules, medical investigators kept descriptions of the boy and his final days clinically bare: During the afternoon of the fourth day after onset, noted the landmark 1959 study that announced the isolation of the Powassan virus, the patient suddenly stopped breathing. He was placed immediately in an artificial respirator. Spontaneous respiration did not recommence.

But now, the boy's 65-year-old sister, just 10 at the time of her brother's death, has spoken publicly for the first time about the anguish of a family tragedy now immortalized in the name of a fatal infection, one now expected to appear in more headlines in the coming years.

And when Sue Cossar remembers the September 1958 passing of her little brother, Lincoln Brian Byers, her words convey an enduring grief, but also a hint of solace that doctors, while initially confounded by the boy's death, were able to discover, at least, what took his life.

"He was an amazing little guy," said Cossar, who was second-youngest of the nine Byers children and had a special fondness for Lincoln, next in line and the 'baby' of the family.

"He loved picking berries," she said. "He was a really good kid. It was very hard on my Mom and Dad."

Mom and Dad are both gone now. But in 1958, the family lived on a farm about 12 kilometres west of Powassan, a property still owned by one of Cossar's older brothers. Lincoln, she recalled, loved animals and thrived in the rural setting: "We always said he was too good of a kid. We always grumbled that we had too many chores, but he was always out in the barn."

The first sign of trouble came on a late-summer afternoon, Sept. 17. "I remember him going to the barn with the boys, with my two older brothers. And they brought him up from the barn because his eyes had started twitching. He couldn't control his eyes."

Lincoln was taken to the family doctor in Powassan. "Dr. (J.E.) Dillane, I don't know how, he knew right away. He told Mom and Dad: "You get him to Sick Kids? Hospital as quick as you can.""

In those days, it was at least a six-hour drive to Toronto's renowned Hospital for Sick Children. "They took him down that night," Cossar said. "Two days later he went into a coma. I think that was on a Tuesday. By the Friday, he had died. It was very traumatic".

Dr. Donald McLean, a Sick Kids physician and medical researcher specializing in microbiology, along with his colleague, Dr. W.L. Donohue, had tracked Lincoln's deteriorating condition and sought permission from the Byers family for an autopsy. The two doctors detected an anomalous inflammation in the boy's brain tissue that would come to define a strain of virus new to the medical world.

The course of Lincoln's illness was summarized in a May 1959 article by McLean and Donohue in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

"Twelve hours before admission the child's mother noticed blinking of his left eyelids," the study stated, "and his eyes moved rhythmically to the left. His father noted some tremor and unsteadiness of the boy's left arm. The child complained of dizziness".

By the time he'd reached Toronto, Lincoln had a 'right-sided headache' and a rising fever. Two days later, neck stiffness was noted for the first time, his temperature soared and the boy's increasing drowsiness deepened into a coma. He died on Sept. 23, 1958.

McLean and Donohue discovered, under the microscope, inflamed cerebral tissue and degenerating nerve cells. Later experiments with mice exposed to the infection confirmed Lincoln had died from a newly identified viral pathogen: Powassan virus.

Cossar recalls how McLean and his colleagues then travelled to Powassan and surrounding areas to conduct an emergency research study to learn more about the virus that had killed Lincoln. Park rangers and other outdoor workers were tested, but the Byers farm was ground zero for the medical probe.

The researchers found a high concentration of virus-carrying ticks in some squirrels in the area. The findings appeared in later editions of the CMAJ, which once called McLean a 'talented tick-hunter' and documented his success in profiling the presence of Powassan virus in ticks found on squirrels and other small mammals at various sites in Canada and the U.S. His findings even prompted a front-page story in the Globe and Mail in February 1960.

"My brothers, they would catch squirrels, and this is what the doctors figured had happened," Cossar said. "They would skin these squirrels. And Lincoln would hold them while they were skinning these squirrels. And this Dr. McLean from Toronto figured it was a tick that, you know, had bitten him."

The illness has remained relatively low on North America's public-health radar over the years. But a severe case in northern New York this summer and new studies showing a greater-than-expected reservoir of the virus in Hudson Valley ticks led the state's senior lawmaker in Washington, Sen. Charles Schumer, to declare war in August on the 'emerging Powassan virus threat'. Schumer also pressed the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to do more to fight all tick-borne illnesses, including the more common but less virulent Lyme disease.

"The need for more research is clear and compelling. We need to bring Lyme disease and the Powassan virus out of the weeds and better educate the public about how to keep themselves and their families safe", Schumer said at the time.

The Times later editorialized in support of a stepped-up public-health strategy to fight Powassan virus. Lyme disease may be well known, the paper said, but "what most don't know is that the same family of black-legged ticks can also cause other diseases that are even more dangerous".

A CDCP study published in 2012 showed only 47 reported cases of Powassan virus since 2001 across the U.S., but nearly all occurred in the last half of the decade, mostly in the northern states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York.

While mild symptoms can be treated, there's no known cure when the virus takes strong hold of a victim, and the ratio of deaths to total cases, compared with other tick-borne illnesses, is extremely high. Five of 15 people in New York diagnosed with Powassan virus have died since 2004.

According to the Saskatoon-based Canadian Co-operative Wildlife Health Centre, Powassan virus has been diagnosed in people in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. As in the U.S., the virus is fatal or leaves victims with debilitating effects in about one-third of all cases, though the number of documented cases is smaller in this country.

Ticks are most active between late spring and early fall, and experts have warned that climate change could increase the incidence of Powassan virus and other infections spread by ticks in northeastern North America.

A U.S. study published in the September issue of the CDCP's Emerging Infectious Diseases journal noted that 'because no vaccines or effective antiviral agents exist' to fight the virus, people should, above all, 'take precautions to prevent tick bites', wear light-coloured clothing with long sleeves and pants tucked into socks, use insect repellent and check themselves and pets for ticks after being outside.

The study also noted that doctors should become more familiar with the Powassan virus 'because this disease is likely to increase in areas to which it is endemic'.

Last week, the U.S.-based pest-control company Terminix also pointed to rising concerns about the Powassan virus to urge the public to take steps to avoid tick bites, including the possible use of backyard insecticides.

The thought of the virus becoming more common, said Cossar, is worrying: "It gives me goosebumps."

The recent public alarms about the infection contrast with the decades of quiet sorrow the Byers family endured following Lincoln's death. But Cossar recalls one other time, many years ago, when memories of her lost brother were stirred by talk of the Powassan virus.

She was working at a store in Powassan when a Toronto doctor and his wife dropped in to shop. They began discussing the link between the town's name and the viral infection. The place, Cossar remembers the man saying, "is well known for the Powassan virus. It was the disease that killed a young boy here."

"So this was just out of the blue," she said. "I'd never heard anybody talk about it before. And it was a weird feeling. This was my brother that he was talking about."

Nettie Belle Fraly-Virta-Dye, age 86 of Manistee, Michigan died Thursday evening April 17, 2014 at West Shore Medical Center.

Nettie was born November 14, 1927 in Melstrand, Michigan the daughter of Arthur, and Gladys (Smith) Fraly, and was the eldest of fifteen children. Nettie married Edward William Virta on September 21, 1946 in Munising, Michigan. She was employed at H.W. Jenks in Frankfort, Michigan for over 24 years before her retirement.

Nettie?s greatest joy in life was her family. She was pre-deceased by her siblings Mary, Donald, Violet, Jim, Arthur, Lawrence (Bones), Robert (Bob), Richard (Butch), Lou Ellen, Dawn, and Sharon. She was also preceded in passing by her sons Derryl Virta, and Edward Virta (who died in infancy); and Granddaughter Jody Lee Hamilton.

She is survived by her sister Nancy Barkley, and brothers Carl, and Timothy Fraly. Her son Donald Virta of Austin, Texas, daughter Sandra (and Terry) Hamilton of Manistee, Michigan. Nettie had 6 surviving grandchildren, Ronda Virta, Todd Virta, Valerie Virta, Donald (and Emily) Van Court, Toby Hamilton, and Lisa Michelle Hamilton. She had 5 great-grand children which were all her ?Treasures?, Devin Scarbrough, Alexandria Hamilton, Ty Hamilton, Katherine Van Court, and Cory Van Court.

Nettie also had very special relationships with her niece Ruth (and Stephen) Dean, her nephew James (and Sandy) Ray, and niece Rebecca (and Kelly) Little. She is also survived by other nieces, nephews, and various other relatives too numerous to list that she loved all dearly.

Cremation has taken place, and her service will be held at the Gentleman?s Motorcycle Club of Manistee, the date, and time as yet undetermined. Forthcoming information regarding her memorial service will be posted on her personal book of memories page at www.oakgrovefh.com
