Death Notice: Bancroft Times Once again, death, the Grim Reaper has passed our way and removed from this life on the last of the early pioneers of this district in the person of John Munro, a resident of Turriff. Born at Hall's Mills, Lanark County on Sept 3, 1850, a son of the late John Munro and Marion McKay, who immigrated from Dornoch, Sutherlandshire during the Scottish Clearances, he was one of a family of seven all of whom have predeceased him. In the early summer of 1879 he came to Dunngannon Township where he located on what was then called the second concession. On February 24th, 1880, he married Mary Turriff, second daughter of John Turiff who was the first settler and for whom the settlement was later named. Mrs. Munro passed away nine years ago. One daughter Mrs. A.W. Munro died ten years ago, while another, Mary died in infancy. Six children survive. John of Detlor, Alex. Daniel and Mrs. W.J. McCaw of Bancroft, Peter and Mrs. H.L. Black of Turriff, with whom he has spent, on the homestead, the last six years. On Sunday morning, July 12th, he suffered a stroke, shortly after sinking into an unconscious condition, from which he never recovered, passing quietly away Wednesday afternoon. In religion, a life- long member of the Presbyterian faith, he was laid to rest in the cemetery at L'Amable beside his wife and daughter on Thursday afternoon. Mr. F. Wicks conducted the service at the home and church, while members of the Bancroft Masonic Lodge conducted a committal service.

MRS. J. H. SYMINGTON

The death occurred in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, Almonte on Tuesday, Aug. 30th of Mrs. Joseph (Margaret Jennett Munro) H. Symington following a short illness. She was 81. Born in Darling Township, she received her education there and in 1903 married Joseph H. Symington, a Ramsay Township farmer and former Reeve of Ramsay. Mrs. Symington was an active church worker in St. Paul's Anglican Church. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary and the Ladies' Guild. Besides her husband, she leaves three sons and two daughters, Milton and Alex of Arnprior; Chas. of Almonte; Mrs. Everton McIntyre of Saskatoon; Mrs. Cecil Mclntyre of Almonte, also one brother, Alex Munro of Galbraith, 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The body was at the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home until Friday when the funeral service was conducted at St. Paul's Anglican Church by Rev. Canon J. W. R. Meakin. Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. Allan, Donald, Claire and Wayne Symington, William Dean and Lorne Bretzlaff.

Daniel Galbraith, MP, MPP, owned the land at Rae Road and Concession 5 in the former Ramsay Township which he purchased in 1855. Upon his death in 1879, his son Robert took over the land, passing it then to his sister Phoebe, Mrs. Robert Black, in the latter part of the century. In 1923, the land was sold to Alex Munro from Darling Township, then in 1944 to Alex?s son-in-law Herbert Hazelwood. Today, the community of Galbraith is a sparse collection of farm homes and a brick bungalow on the site where the yellow schoolhouse once stood. The first one room Galbraith School, S.S. No. 5 Ramsay, was on a half acre of land at the top of the hill, which Mr. Galbraith had sold to the school trustees in 1870 for $1.00. He also gave land for a second school in 1875 on the opposite side of the road, the yellow schoolhouse. This school operated until 1969 when the Government of Ontario mandated the consolidation of county schools and bussed students to nearby Almonte or Carleton Place.

John Munro died at the age of 22 years, while working as a logger for Porcupine Hill Logging at Rat Portage, Ontario. He contacted Typhoid Fever and was brought out on dog sled by a group of fellow Indian loggers, walking day and night to the hospital in Sudbury, Ontario, where he later died. Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 2nd, for Mrs Annie Peacock, beloved wife of the late George Peacock. She passed away in the Almonte General Hospital after a short illness in her 80th year. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The service was conducted by Mr Peter Zimmerman and Mr George Poole. Mrs Peacock was born in Darling Township, a daughter of Hugh Munro and Jennie Price. Surviving are three sons and four daughters: Wilbert of Carp; Everette and Nelson of Prince George, B.C.; Mrs Vernon Donaldson (Carolyn) Lanark; Mrs Alex McArthur (Annie) Ramsay; Mrs William Rhodey (Lena) Kitchener; Mrs Melville Wark (Muriel) Clayton. She was predeceased by two daughters (Jean) Mrs Wilbert Paterson, (Katherine) of Ramsay. Also surviving are 27 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. One sister Mrs William McKirdy and two brothers, Ernie Munro of Ramsay and Jacob of Prince Albert, Sask. ALEX THOMAS MUNRO

The very large funeral of Alex Thomas Munro was held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 26th from the Comba Funeral Home where the body was taken from his late residence the day of the service. The late Mr. Munro was in his 71st year and passed away Nov. 24 after several months of sickness. Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Elizabeth Ellis; three daughters (Mary) of Toronto; (Edith) Oscar Irwin, Carleton Place; (Ruth, Mrs. Gerald Sharpe, Oshawa; eight sons: Lyle of Carleton Place; Cecil, Kingston; Alex H., Prince Rupert, B.C.; Russell, Vancouver Island, B.C.; Glen and Elmer of Oshawa; Ira at home; Maurice of Sudbury. Nineteen grandchildren also mourn his loss besides two sisters, Mrs. Wm. McKirdy of Clayton; Mrs. George Peacock of Almonte, and two brothers, Ernie of Clayton, Jake of Prince Albert, Sask. James Leonard Munro was born to Dan and Jean Munro on March 16th, 1927, on the family farm near Drake, Saskatchewan. James was the second youngest child of their family of 9 children. The family moved to Nipawin, Saskatchewan when James was still very young, and landed at the new Munro farm a few miles east of Nipawin. In the early years it was tough living on the farm, and Dan and Jean taught their children how to work, live, and love our Heavenly Father.
As a young man, James had many different jobs off the farm, and one spring after returning home from working in a steel foundry in Ontario, Gladys Nadiger was at the farm visiting his sisters. He told Gladys, they were going to be ?chums? that summer. It turned out they were married that year on November 3rd, 1948. Jim and Gladys had three children, Harold, Gwen, and Brian. They lived on the farm East of Nipawin until the kids started school, then they would move into town for winter, and back out to the farm for the summer.
Jim farmed with his son Harry until Harry?s sudden passing in 2013, and then farmed with his grandson, Vince up until the fall of 2023. His livelihood and passion was farming. He loved to be in the action and was always up for an adventure.
He made his choice to serve God as a young man and stayed true to that calling until the end of his life. He was at peace with his choice, and his words of encouragement and positive outlook were a light to all those who knew him.
Jim and Gladys? family has grown to include 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Jim loved and showed interest in his family and had a special relationship with each one. He would visit, play, tease, and joke, or ?tune you in,? if needed. Everyone who knew him has fond memories of our dad, grandpa, and friend.

Annie Evelyn McArthur died July 20 in the Almonte General Hospital after being ill for two months. She was 77. The Country street apartment-dweller was born Aug 12, 1914 to the late George Peacock and the late Anne Munro. She was married the late Alex S. McArthur July 11, 1936. She is survived by sons Stuart of Hudson, Que., James of Surry, B.C., Clare of Ottawa, Gordon of Almonte, daughters Anne Lowe of Ottawa, Catherine Ethel Pringle of Ottawa, Mary Warren of Ottawa, Dorothy Woods and Diane Little of Wawa. She is also survived by brothers Wilbert of Carp and Nelson of Armstrong B.C. and sisters Caroline Ethel Donaldson of Almonte, Lena Rhodey of Pakenham and Murial Wark of R.R. 1 Almonte. She was predeceased by son Keith, daughter Linda, brother Everette and sisters Katie Paterson and Jean Peacock. The funeral service was held at the Gamble Funeral Home July 24 at 2 p.m. Carson Wallace and George Poole led the service at the Gamble Funeral Home. Burial was at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Edwin McKirdy, Delmer McKirdy, Pete Munro, Harold Hogg, Alex Hazelwood and Bill Munro.

We regret to announce the passing of Nelson Mervyn Peacock on February 11th, 2008 at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Nels was born December 22nd, 1926 in Carleton Place, Ontario. He moved to Prince George in 1947, where he met and married the love of his life, Wilma, who predeceased him in April 2007.
They moved to Armstrong in 1975 and retired to Vernon in 1995. Nels in survived by his children, Judy (Ray) Arnoldus, Allan Peacock, Laurie Peacock (Dan Proulx), Bruce Peacock, Gayle (Darrell) Knorr, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his sister, Muriel Wark and his faithful companion, Nikki. Len and Isabel enjoyed the 40's, 50's and 60's at their shack tent in Waskesiu moving to Candle Lake in 1968, where they spent many enjoyable hours playing cards with their friends. Len was active in the Cosmopolitan Club of Prince Albert. He was a loyal Raider fan, listening to every game when he was unable to attend. Len spent his last two years in Pineview Terrace Lodge where he received kind and loving care. Len will be remembered by his family for his unconditional love and support. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 1:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, 130 - 9th St. East, 306-763-8488. Maurice left the Ottawa Valley and headed north to Sudbury, where he began a long and enjoyable career at INCO Ltd. ?Scotty? worked as a jackleg driller for over 30 years, and then as a crusher-man towards the end of his 39 years with the company; he was well-known for his strong and natural work ethic. In 1965, Maurice married Etheline Constantineau, and together they had 3 children, Darren, Dawn and Kimberly. He was a gentle and generous soul who loved to tell stories and inquire about the life experiences of everyone he met. Maurice will be lovingly remembered by his large family, as he was the baby of 11 children born to Alex and Elizabeth (Ellis) Munro. He is survived by his brothers, Glen (Oshawa, ON) and Russell (Duncan, BC), sisters-in-law Donna (Almonte, ON), Eileen (Oshawa, ON), Pat (BC), and Freddie (BC), and many nieces and nephews. Maurice was predeceased by siblings Lyle, Mary, Edith, Cecil, Alec, Ruth, Elmer and Ira.
There will be no funeral or visitation, in accordance with Maurice?s wishes. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the charity of your choice.

DELBERT ERNEST MUNRO - (1962)

A resident of Sudbury 1941, Delbert Ernest Munro, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Munro, Ramsay Township, died suddenly on Sunday, March 11. He was in his 44th year. The body was brought from Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, Sudbury on Monday night to the Comba Funeral Home, Almonte Ont. He went to Sudbury in 1941 to work for the International Nickel Company at Frood Mine. He later worked as manager of a farm owned by the Frood Hotel. He was born at Halls Mills, Ont., May 12th, 1918. Later the family moved to Ramsay and he was educated at Bennies Corners School. The service was conducted by Mr. Andrew Blair at the funeral home and by Mr. William Bryant at the Clayton Union Cemetery. The pallbearers were Edwin McKirdy, John Currie, Ira Munro, Willingdon Munro, Ronald Gunn and William Bolger. The flower bearers were six nephews, Kenneth McLeod, Howard Munro, Carl Munro, Brian Munro, Roy McLeod and Roy Munro. He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Daniel, Ramsay; John, Almonte; Kenneth and Carman, Ramsay. Another brother Howard predeceased him. There are four sisters: Mrs. Wilbert McLeod (Eileen), Niagara Falls, Ont.; Mrs. Wm. Munro, (Wilma) Ramsay; Marion at home and Mrs. John Terpstra (Muriel) of Sudbury.
