Daniel Galbraith, MP, MPP, owned the land at Rae Road and Concession 5 in the former Ramsay Township which he purchased in 1855. Upon his death in 1879, his son Robert took over the land, passing it then to his sister Phoebe, Mrs. Robert Black, in the latter part of the century. In 1923, the land was sold to Alex Munro from Darling Township, then in 1944 to Alex?s son-in-law Herbert Hazelwood. Today, the community of Galbraith is a sparse collection of farm homes and a brick bungalow on the site where the yellow schoolhouse once stood. The first one room Galbraith School, S.S. No. 5 Ramsay, was on a half acre of land at the top of the hill, which Mr. Galbraith had sold to the school trustees in 1870 for $1.00. He also gave land for a second school in 1875 on the opposite side of the road, the yellow schoolhouse. This school operated until 1969 when the Government of Ontario mandated the consolidation of county schools and bussed students to nearby Almonte or Carleton Place.

Donald (Don) James Hazelwood, long-time resident of the Bay Area, has departed to be with the Lord on February 21, 2015. He was born on February 16, 1924, in Oakland, California.
Don was a proud graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Alameda, California in 1941, and of Santa Clara University with a degree in business in 1948. During his college years, Don served in the US Navy during WWII. Following graduation from college, Don worked the majority of his career at Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco before retiring in 1982.
In retirement, Don loved to lawn bowl and was last a member of the Rossmoor Lawn Bowling Club. He was also an avid baseball fan and collector of baseball memorabilia. He was a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and the Pacific Coast League Historical Society, and was a devoted fan of the old Oakland Oaks baseball team and the current Oakland A's.
Don is survived by his wife, Rosary, whom he married 59 years ago in Los Banos, California; son, Scott and his wife, Rachael; brother, Robert and his wife, Barbara; and grandchildren James and David. Don was preceded in death by brother, Jack (survived by wife Jean).
A funeral service will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 1600 Rossmoor Parkway, Walnut Creek, California 94595, on March 14, 2015, at 11:00am. Robert Hazelwood was born in Oakland, California, and received his doctorate in comparative physiology from the University of California at Davis in 1958. He worked at both Boston University?s School of Medicine and the University of California at San Francisco?s School of Medicine before arriving at the University of Houston in 1963.
Dr. Hazelwood?s research focused on certain aspects of diabetes. His research team at the University of Houston worked for a time in collaboration with the Kansas University Medical School, a joint effort that resulted in the discovery of a hitherto unknown hormone produced in the pancreas. Although Dr. Hazelwood is now retired, his influence is readily apparent in the work of his former graduate students, many of whom have attained top positions in industry and academic institutions. These graduate students, says Dr. Hazelwood, were one of the great pleasures of working at the University of Houston. While he misses teaching, he remains busy in retirement, traveling to Thailand during a part of each year?as he has done for the last 14 years?in order to teach at a medical school in Chiang Mai.
Dr. Hazelwood received many honors during his career at the University of Houston, but the Esther Farfel Award was especially meaningful, he explains, because ?it rewarded excellent work not in just one aspect of academic life, but in all areas: teaching, research, and community service. Receiving the Farfel meant that I was not overspecialized in one area or another, but rather that I was a complete academician. In that sense, it is a very special award.?

Gordon Harper Hazelwood of Guelph, Ontario died peacefully in his sleep on November 16, 2023, at the age of 96.
Gordon was born in Papineau Township, Ontario to his parents Herbert & Olive (Harper) Hazelwood on January 14, 1927. At 3 years old Gordon lost his mother to scarlet fever. A few years later Bert married Esther Munro, who became a loving mother to Gordon and his brother Don. In 1944 the family moved from Mattawa to the farm in Almonte, Ontario. He made his choice to follow Jesus when he was a teenager. He loved the farm but at 23 he followed the call to spread the Gospel Story and was active in that work for 65 years. He loved to talk about Jesus and share messages from the Bible. He will be missed by family and many friends.
His siblings are the late Donald (Marjorie Richards), the late Della (Gerald Clark), the late Alexander (the late Jean Gray) (Annie McGee-Hartman), Clarence (Gwen Byers), the late Keith (Donna MacLean), the late Garry (Audrey Smith), and Isabelle (Wallace Eady).

Alexander Herbert Hazelwood of Almonte, Ontario passed away on September 29, at the age of 85. After a valiant fight with cancer, Alex died peacefully surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Annie (McGee-Hartman).
Alex was born in Mattawa to parents Herbert & Esther Hazelwood on May 6, 1937. His family moved to the farm when he was around the age of 7 and lived alongside his grandparents, Alexander & Delilah Munro. His siblings were Gordon, Donald [Deceased] (Marjorie Richards) Della [Deceased] (Gerald Clark), Clarence (Gwen Byers), Keith [Deceased] (Donna MacLean), Garry [Deceased] (Audrey Smith) and Isabelle (Wallace Eady). Alex married Jean (Gray) in 1957. Jean died of cancer in 1991.
At the age of 54 Alex was fortunate to meet and marry Annie who has stayed by his side over the past 30 years.
He is survived by his children Donna (Kevin Hunter) Linda (Randy Brown), Susan, Diane, Bill (Kim Alexson), Nancy, Michael (Tafline Triska) and Timothy. He is survived by his stepchildren Helen (Tom Gray) and Paul (Cathy Hagon). Annie has the following step children: Judy (Earl Kerr), Sandra (Tony Linardic), Dolores (Bob Trask), Nancy (Len Stroeder), Brenda ( deceased) ( Richard Haines), Louie (Shelley) Hartman. There are 19 grandchildren.
Alex leaves behind 23 Grandchildren, (Jason, Alana, Tara, Rachel, Miranda, Abigail, Shadé, Kaylee, KatieSue, Ashley, Aaron, Shianna, Riley, Dylan, Jonathon, Jordan, Maverick, Lawson, Chace, Matthew, Rebecca, Andrew, Emily) and 13 Great Grandchildren (Kaysa, Dax, Chloe, Judah, Isola, Coco, Patience, Jeremy, Hunter, Zoe, Ford, Mason, Mariana).

It is with great sadness the family announce his passing at the Mattawa Algonquin Nursing Home on Saturday, June 24th, 2023. Nelson Edward McMartin, was the beloved husband of Anita Elizabeth (née Ritala). He was in his 83rd year. Nelson was the loving father of John McMartin of Pickering, Melissa Paradis and her husband Robert of Ottawa, and Jason McMartin and his wife Tanya of Mattawa. He was the proud and loving grandfather to Jenna, Michelle, Blake, Evan, Elizabeth, Jacob, Naomi, and great grandfather to Alice. Nelson was the dearly loved brother of Claire McMartin and Nancee Adams (Jim). Nelson will also be fondly remembered by the Hazelwood family. Predeceased by his parents, Norman McMartin and Eleanor (née Hazelwood), and his brother Neil McMartin.
Nelson was raised on the McMartin family farm in Papineau-Cameron Township (Mattawa) and was proud to be a third-generation to reside on the farm. Beside farming, he was also an entrepreneur. He operated vehicle sales businesses, and property management for many years. A man of faith, the St. Alban's Anglican Church Community was important to him. Nelson's family was always important; they all have great memories of a well-lived life.
Visitation will be held in the Martyn & Sloan "Mattawa Chapel" on Thursday June 29th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the St. Alban's Anglican Church, on Friday, June 30th at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in the family plot at the Pinehill Cemetery, Mattawa. If desired, donations to the St. Alban The Martyr Anglican Church General Fund, the Algonquin Nursing Home, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
