Mrs Adam Johnson Passes Away In Her 98th Year.
One of Almonte's oldest residents, Mrs Mary Catherine Munro Johnson, passed away at the Almonte General Hospital early Sunday morning, August 2nd. Mrs Johnson had been a patient in the hospital for exactly one month when her death occurred. She was in her 98th year. Born in Lanark Township on January 5, 1872, she was a daughter of Daniel Munro and his wife Margaret McMunn. She was the last surviving of a family of twelve. She was married to Mr Adam Johnson on March 13, 1894, at Webbwood, Ontario, and resided at Massey for five years before coming to Almonte in 1900. For the first five years in Almonte they resided on the Harold Robertson farm on the outskirts of town, and in 1905 moved to the present home on Queen Street, Mr Johnson predeceased his wife in 1945, and a son, Dr Williard E. Johnson died at a early age in 1933. Mrs Johnson was a member of Almonte United Church, and a life member of the Women's Missionary Society. Surviving are three daughters, Gertrude (Mrs Wm Colborne) and Miss Margaret Johnson of Almonte, and Isabel (Mrs R.G. Whitelaw) of London, Ontario. The funeral service was held at the Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, on Tuesday, August 4th, at 2 p.m. and was conducted by Rev Morris of Almonte United Church. Burial was made at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were John H. Munro, John Currie, Charles Rath and Edwin Halpenny.

The death occurred at the Great War Memorial Hospital, Perth, on Tuesday March 2, 1948 of an esteemed and well-known resident of Lanark township in the person of Daniel Munro. In failing health for the last year, he was in serious condition for the last two months.
Born April 3, 1895, son of John Henry Munro and Margaret Ellen Manary, he served overseas for two years during World War 1. On June 24, 1925, he was united in marriage with Miss Pearl Ramsbottom, of Lanark, and following their marriage they took up residence in their
farm home on the twelfth line of Lanark Twp., where they lived ever since and farmed successfully "Dannie" as he was better known, enjoyed life to its fullest and through his sterling qualities made many friends. He was very fond of the young people and loved sports of all kinds. During the "twenties" he was a very valued member of the famous Union Hall Tigers Baseball team. He was dearly beloved in the community where he lived by his removal through death the County looses a good citizen. In religion, he was a member of St. John's Anglican Church. Besides his widow and two sons, Keith and Willingdon, he is survived by his parents, three brothers and four sisters; Isaac of Lanark; Clifford and Bill Munro of Perth; Mary (Mrs. John Currie; Edna (Mrs. Ernest Munro) of Clayton; Viola (Mrs. D. J. Craig),
Carleton Place and Gladys (Mrs. Everrett Closs) of Halpenny. The funeral which was one of the largest witnessed in the community, in some time, took place from the family residence on Thursday afternoon March 4, to St. John's Anglican Church Boyds, where the service was conducted by Rev. D. F. Weeghar and Rev. Goodwin.

Mrs. Carrie King, a life-long Lanark County resident, passed away suddenly but peacefully on February 26, 1977, at the Lanark Lodge, Perth, in her 84th year. Carrie (Lee) was the daughter of the late William Lee and Adeline Munro. She married the late William J. King, who was also a well-known resident of Lanark County. Mrs. King is survived by her only daughter, Addie (Mrs. Randolph Elliott) of Almonte and predeceased by her son Albert. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A life-time resident of Lanark County, Carrie was born in 1893 at Tatlock where she received her education and became a member of the United Church. She and her husband spent most of their married life farming in that community. Later she spent many years in Lanark where she worked for some time in the Glenayr Mill. Before becoming a resident of the Lanark Lodge, Carrie lived for several years with her son, Albert, in Lanark and later with her daughter Addie in Almonte. Her five years spent at Lanark Lodge were happy and active ones. Carrie acquired a great interest and talent for painting and will be lovingly remembered by the many recipients of her work. In her home at the Lodge, she had many friends among the staff and residents for whom she had great affection. The funeral was held on Monday, February 28, at the Young Funeral Home in Lanark. The service was conducted by Rev. Ron Reid of the Pentecostal Church in Perth. Interment will be in the spring at the United Cemetery in Clayton. Carrie will be greatly missed by many friends both young and old. She was most understanding with younger people and was known as "Grandma" to many young folk. Known for her kindness and generosity, Carrie will be long remembered by relatives and friends alike.

The death took place of Margaret Esther Munro at her home near Wetaskiwin, on March 3rd. She was the second daughter of Mrs. A.S. Craig, and was aged 18 years and three months.
The deceased, who became ill last November, was taken to Kamloops, B.C., by her mother for her health. They returned February 24th and the deceased passed away one week later.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her mother and step-father, one brother and two sisters; also three step sisters and two step brothers.
The deceased bore her illness very patiently, being in bed some three months, and died trusting in the Saviour. She was loved by all who knew her, and the passing away of this young life is deeply mourned, especially by her mother, who tenderly cared for her through all her illness.

Death Cuts Short Promising Career Of Young Doctor Willard E. Johnson, Former Almonte Boy, Dies This Morning In Montreal
Almonte people were shocked to learn of the death in Montreal at three o'clock this (Thursday) morning of Dr Willard E. Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Adam Johnson of Almonte, in his 34th year. Dr Johnson visited his relatives here at Christmas time. He knew he was suffering from a form of stomach ulcer and hoped it would yield to medical treatment and observance of a special diet. On Friday afternoon last, shortly after he had been engaged in an operation on a patient, he suffered an acute attack to the trouble that had been bothering him for some time. An immediate operation showed that a rupture had occurred at the point where the ulcer was located thus inducing peritonitis. As time passed it looked a though the peritonitis would clear up but pneumonia set in thus complicating the patient's condition and narrowing his chances of recovery. In spite of the best attention that could be provided Dr Johnson passed away early this morning. His parents had gone to Montreal when his condition became serious last Friday. His three sisters left Almonte on an early train this morning when it was decided their brother had but a short time to live. Their train reached the city at seven o'clock, several hours after death ensued. Dr Johnson was a promising young physician and surgeon who had already made considerable progress on the ladder that leads to professional success. He was born in Almonte on Dec 26th, 1902, and attended the public and high school here. He was most successful in his studies and entered McGill University at the early age of 17. He graduated with the degree of M.D., C.M. in 1925 and took up practice in Montreal. Dr Johnson became associated with Drs William and Howard Reilly, natives of the Almonte district and graduates of the local high school, who have been prominent in the medical circles of Montreal for a long time. He was appointed resident doctor for the Mount Royal Hotel and later for the Windsor Hotel. For some years he was on the staff of the General Hospital and six months ago received the coveted recognition of appointment to the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital. Dr Johnson leaves his parents and three sisters, Mrs Grant W. Dunlop and Misses Isobel and Margaret of Almonte. A service will be held in Wray's undertaking parlours, University street, Montreal, at 4 p.m. Friday, and the body will be brought to Almonte that night on board the train that arrives her at 10.33. The funeral will be held from the family residence, Queen street, on Sunday afternoon, at 2.30 o'clock to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. There will be a service at the house half an hour earlier. The sympathy of a large circle of friends in Almonte and district goes out to the bereaved parents and sisters.

A resident of Sudbury 1941, Delbert Ernest Munro, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Munro, Ramsay Township, died suddenly on Sunday, March 11. He was in his 44th year. The body was brought from Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, Sudbury on Monday night to the Comba Funeral Home, Almonte Ont. He went to Sudbury in 1941 to work for the International Nickel Company at Frood Mine. He later worked as manager of a farm owned by the Frood Hotel. He was born at Halls Mills, Ont., May 12th, 1918. Later the family moved to Ramsay and he was educated at Bennies Corners School. The service was conducted by Mr. Andrew Blair at the funeral home and by Mr. William Bryant at the Clayton Union Cemetery. The pallbearers were Edwin McKirdy, John Currie, Ira Munro, Willingdon Munro, Ronald Gunn and William Bolger. The flower bearers were six nephews, Kenneth McLeod, Howard Munro, Carl Munro, Brian Munro, Roy McLeod and Roy Munro. He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Daniel, Ramsay; John, Almonte; Kenneth and Carman, Ramsay. Another brother Howard predeceased him. BARTHOLOMEW, Margaret Lillian passed away on July 15 at her home. She was born on January 31, 1921 in Central Butte, Saskatchewan Canada to Andrew and Jane (McIlraith Munro) Weyer. In March of 1936 Andy and Jane migrated to Spokane, Washington with seven children in tow when Margaret was 15 years of age. She attended West Valley High School for one year then found work as a cook's helper and laundress for board and room plus $1.00 per day at the Bethany Home located just across the street from her home. She later worked as a live-in maid for the grandson of one of the founders of Spokane. In 1940 at age 19, Margaret was employed by Armour & Company and earned top wages for women at 54 cents per hour, trimming and cutting meats.
She met Stan Bartholomew in 1941, they wed in 1942 and shortly thereafter Stan was drafted for WWII. Margaret, like other women of the day, did her part in stepping up to take over work usually done by men while they were overseas fighting the war. She had a brief stint in Civil Service at the Spokane Army Air Force Depot (SPAAD) in Galena, Washington, in a classified material warehouse which stored bombsight parts for planes. Later, she saw an ad in the newspaper for the Northern Pacific Railway, which was looking for students for telegraphy, so she enrolled in the Spokane Telegraph School and was accepted. By Easter of 1944 she was notified by the school that she was ready to enter the work force. Her assignment sent her to Northern Pacific Railway Station in Bucoda, Washington, just north of Centralia. Here she used her skills learned in school to work as a telegrapher at the Western Union Telegraph & Cable Office located inside the train station. She worked there until November 1945 when her husband Stan returned from the war.
From 1951-1960 she owned and operated dairy farms at Spangle and Loon Lake, WA. She retired after many years as the Head Dietician at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane WA. She had a hard work ethic to survive and raise her family. After retirement she followed her passion to write history stories of her life and family, some of which have been published. She was blessed with four sons who were the love, pride and joy of her life. James 1946, Daniel 1949, Roger 1955 and Jeffrey 1960.
She is survived by sons James, Daniel, Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Karen. Three grandchildren Brian, Trina and Andrew. Five great-grandchildren Dylan, Kyle, Josh, Jacob and Julie. Brother Joseph Weyer and sister-in-law Genevieve Weyer all of Spokane. Brothers William (Bill) Weyer Houston, TX and Patrick Weyer and sister-in-law Ruth of North Bend, OR and many many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her son Roger, brother Tom Weyer, sisters Catherine and Wilma, sister-in-law Carol Weyer and her parents.
Visitation on Thursday, July 28th from 1-5pm followed by the Vigil at 7pm, both at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home, 2203 N. Division. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church (corner of Empire and Standard) near 545 E. Providence, on Friday, July 29th at 11am. Charles (Tom) Weyer passed away on November 3, 2010 at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Genevieve, daughter Kim Koenig, son Tom Porter and daughter Rhonda Jiskra, four grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Tom was born October 3, 1922 to Jane and Andrew Weyer in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was named Charles after his father?s father. He was the third child of seven, but the first born boy. He is survived by his older sister Margaret, and younger brothers Bill, Joe and Pat.
Tom was an avid reader, hunter and story teller. Always the teacher, his stories were full of life lessons and generally many laughs. He also enjoyed friends and family, fishing, camping, all things nature, and all things history. He had a knack for fabricating a variety of items out of metal that were built to outlast us all. Hard work was just in his nature.
Tom was a World War II veteran. He enlisted in the Army November 30, 1942 and discharged December 20, 1945. During his years of service he received the Good Conduct Medal, European Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, two oak leaf clusters, as well as the Distinguished Unit Citation for serving with the first platoon, Company L, 351st Infantry, 88th Division, during the Rome-Arno campaign in Italy. He also received three Purple Hearts. One for being hit by a 88 millimeter shell in the back, another for having his arm and shoulder shattered and the third when his intestines ruptured from the concussion of a huge shell explosion. He was sent home to Fort Lewis, Washington when he contracted peritonitis and gangrene. Tom was a life-long member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He did not make a big deal about his war time accomplishments, but remained our quiet hero. World War II Veterans are a special brand of tough men that we may never see again.
He had a profoundly positive impact on all who knew and loved him. His persuasive sense of humor got the best of all of us. He will be missed, but his spirit will be resurrected through his friends and family that share heart-felt memories of him.
There will be a graveside service for Tom at Peone Prairie Cemetery in Mead, Washington on Veteran?s Day November 11, 2010 at 1pm.

She taught in a one-room school house in rural Montana; and became a foster mother for a total of 13 girls (ages 13-19 years old). In 1968, she moved to New Jersey with her six months old daughter, Christine. She was employed by Warner Lambert Pharmaceuticals, and later for Allied Chemical in their marketing departments. She married Robert Brunner in 1969, and had a son August ?Thomas? in 1970. In 1977 she married the true love of her life, Edward ?Lloyd? Buttram. He had three children from a previous marriage; David, Jeanine and Doug. In 1977, the family moved to Midland, Michigan where she was employed by Northwood Institute. She was the epitome of a naturally born homemaker; admired for her flair of decorating, entertaining, and devotion to her children and the community. In 1981, they moved to the Raleigh area of North Carolina. She was employed by Cameron-Brown (later named Wells Fargo) for many years and retired in 2009.
Deva was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lloyd Buttram. She is survived by her loving daughter Christine (Greg) Miller; and her devoted son, Thomas (Terri) Buttram; and her step-children, David (Marlene) Buttram, Jeanine Denning (Mark), and Douglas (Laura) Buttram. She leaves behind her precious grandchildren Aaron Thomas and Matthew Blair Miller, Jason and Elizabeth, Alex and Natalie, and Camille, Brett, Pierce and Brooke. She is also survived by her sister Mary Esther and her husband, Bill Stiles, of Dallas, Texas; and nephews Roy, Jay, and Morgan Stiles. Her greatest love was her family.
Deva always knew she had a biological sister named Nancy. In 2014, she asked Josh Shaffer of the News and Observer, to help locate her biological sister, Nancy. He located Nancy in Arizona, and Nancy called her on April 17th. They both cried. Nancy flew to Raleigh, and they finely met after seventy-one years. Deva found she had two living half-brothers, Robin and Larry; and another sister, Verna. All were welcoming and gracious. They all kept in contact through telephone calls and letters.
