BARRY COUNTY -- Marshal "Mark" Kik, the longtime police chief of Barry Township, shot and killed himself shortly after he showed up for work this morning, police said.
Kik, 52, was found behind the police station on East Orchard Street, near Delton. Sheriff Dar Leaf was with the chief's widow and family this afternoon.
Sheriff's deputies had responded to a 7 a.m. request to check the chief's welfare when they found his body behind the police station, Undersheriff Robert Baker said.
He would not specify precisely what led police to check on the chief. Police said it was apparent Kik died of self-inflicted injuries.
Baker said the loss would be difficult for many. Kik, who served the department nearly 30 years, was widely known in law-enforcement circles as well as the community.
"He was well-liked and respected and known throughout the county, not just in this township, but the county, and he will be missed," Baker said. "It's a hard time for everybody."Township supervisor Wesley Kahler said Kik became chief 29 years ago, just months after he joined the department.
"Mark will be sadly missed by the Barry Township board and the entire community," he said in a statement. "Mark was truly part of this community. Our heart-felt prayers and thoughts go out to Mark's family at this very sad time."
