    Dorothy Jean VanderWeele of Boca Raton, Florida passed away on February 18, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with heart disease. Born Dorothy Jean Gensler in Kalamazoo, Michigan on January 14, 1927, she was the daughter of Jerome K. Gensler and Margaret (Musselman) Gensler. She married the love of her life Cornelius (Buck) VanderWeele in 1948 and raised two daughters. Their marriage was beautiful and punctuated by trips all over the world. The family lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Columbia, South Carolina, Bernville, Pennsylvania, Greenville, South Carolina and Naples, Florida. In 2009, Dorothy and husband Buck moved to St. Andrew?s Estates South in Boca Raton, Florida where she made many new friends and enjoyed the activities there.
    Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Cornelius (Buck) VanderWeele, daughter Sandra Gregersen and her husband Thomas of Delray Beach, Florida, daughter Sally VanderWeele and her husband William Boardman of Hingham, Massachusetts, granddaughter Kristen Najmabadi and husband Jon of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and grandson Brian Gregersen of Boynton Beach, Florida. Dorothy was pre-deceased by her younger brother, Richard Bruce Gensler.
    Dorothy enjoyed cooking, entertaining, caring for her family, traveling and spending time with family and friends. She was known for her grace and generosity and was loved by everyone she knew. Dorothy was an activist early in life. She was the first female Student Council President of Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1944. (This was the high school where President Obama delivered the commencement address in 2010.) She was the PTA President for the Kalamazoo school system and an early supporter of adequate funding for education. Her TV appearances on behalf of the school system led to her being asked to host a women's daytime television show, an early form of the present day talk show. She was a golfer and won several country club championships. She was an active volunteer and the president of the volunteers group for the Shriner?s Hospital in Greenville South Carolina and a docent for the Historic Columbia Foundation in Columbia, SC. She was a member of the Friends of Lake Keowee Society (F.O.L.K.S) where she organized annual educational events for school children to learn about the importance of protecting water quality. Her last years were devoted to her family and friends. They will miss her loving and courageous spirit.
    A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew?s Estates South on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 4PM.

    Richard Bruce Gensler passed away October 7, 2006. "Dick," son of the late Jerome Kermit and Margaret (Musselman) Gensler, was born March 28, 1932 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He attended Western Michigan University. On August 14, 1954 he married Nancy Newton of Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Dick served in the U.S. Army Security Agency from 1952-1955. He had been employed at Fuller Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo as Chief Engineer, as Manufacturing Manager at Hydreco, and General Manager of Parker Hannifin's Pneumatic Division retiring after 28 years of service. Surviving are his beloved wife, Nancy, of 52 years, their two children, and three grandsons: Mark Richard Gensler and grandson Matheus Pacheco Gensler of Encinitas, CA; daughter Sharon and husband Joel Kloosterman, grandsons Jason Kloosterman, Travis Kloosterman, all of Oceanside, CA. Also surviving are his dear sister Dorothy Jean and husband Cornelius VanderWeele of Naples, FL, and a sister-in-law Suzanne (Newton) Baltzer of Menlo Park, CA. There are nieces, cousins, and a host of friends who were special to him, especially his lifelong buddies dubbed "The Crooked Lake Gang." Dick was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered most for his sense of humor, passion for sailing, the innovative manufacturing machines he designed, and the artistic cartoons and characters he created. Dick had been a Little League umpire, CAD instructor at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, member of the Gull Lake Country Club and Yacht Club, and a Deacon and 50-year member of the First Congregational Church of Kalamazoo, MI. Upon moving to Florida, he became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stuart. A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church of Stuart, officiated by Rev. Douglas LaPointe, after which a luncheon will be served in Fellowship Hall, 1715 NW Pine Lake Drive, Stuart, FL 34994. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Stuart or to the Treasure Coast Hospices Foundation, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, FL 34997. A private inurnment service will be conducted at Riverside Cemetery, Kalamazoo, Michigan at a later date.
