Gwendolyn (Grimes) Chapman passed away peacefully on Aug. 26, 2015, at Apple Rehab in Mystic. The daughter of Arthur R. And Cornelia (Avery) Grimes, she would have celebrated her 90th birthday in September.
A graduate of Williams Memorial Institute, Gwen worked as a secretary and later for her cousins at Hewitt Woodcrafters in Old Mystic for more than 20 years. She enjoyed co-workers and customers alike. She next worked for Marlborough Country Barn and then Sturbridge Yankee Workshop until her retirement.
Gwen married Harold S. Chapman on April 7, 1945. He passed away in February 2001. Together they enjoyed area as well as high school sports events. Until recently, she continued to follow the Red Sox, the Patriots, and both the men's and women's UConn basketball teams. Always a lover of a challenging jigsaw puzzle, she also enjoyed a good romantic novel.
A talented knitter, her family enjoyed their handmade sweaters and shared them lovingly when outgrown. Gwen was especially proud of her baby booties. A family friend once referred to them as "astronaut boots". She made hundreds of pairs over the years. Her father-in-law, Giles Chapman, made sure each new baby on his milk route received a pair.
Gwen will be missed by her daughter, Gwen Ann Joseph and husband, Richard, of Mystic; her beloved granddaughter and great-granddaughter, Michelle and Payton Edwards of Ledyard; her sister, Marilyn "Muggs" Bufkin of New Mexico; her brother, Prentis Grimes of Waterford; and several nieces and nephews and cousins so very special to her.
She was also predeceased by her sister, Beverly Kelly.
Thanks to the caring staff at Apple for their care and concerns for her.
There are no services per her request. Interment will be private.
Byles-Groton Memorial Home is assisting the family.

Muggs Bufkin, 87, of Deming passed away peacefully at her home on Friday January 15, 2016.
She was born March 1, 1928 in New London, Waterford, Connecticut to Arthur and Cornelia Grimes.
Muggs dedicated her life to the care of others. She served as an LPN and worked at Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home for 34 years up until the day of her death. She was well loved by those she served and colleagues with whom she worked. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and she was a tremendous example of selfless love to all who knew her.
She is survived by her brother, Prentis Grimes of Connecticut, her niece, Gwen Ann Joseph (Richard), a great niece, a great-great niece (Connecticut), Susan Archer of Connecticut; stepdaughters, Jackie White (Don) Kitty Collyge (Billy Joe), and Cindy Taylor, six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She will be missed immensely by her ?adopted? daughter Dixie Wertz, her seven children and spouses, 22 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Muggs was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Gwendolyn Chapman and Beverly Kelly, her first husband Johnny Johnson and her second husband Robert Selby Bufkin.
A celebration of her life will be held on January 30, 2016 at 10 o?clock in the morning at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1000 W. Florida. An additional memorial service for the nursing home residents and her co-workers will be held at Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home at 4 o?clock in the afternoon that same day, January 30, 2016.

Beverly Beebe Grimes Kelly, 74, passed away Feb. 12, 2005 in Jacksonville.
Born July 11, 1930 in Waterford, Mrs. Kelly was the daughter of Arthur R. and Cornelia Avery Grimes.
Having retired from the Middletown Township School System, she ran the "Take Stock in Children" program in Flagler, Florida.
She was predeceased in 2004 by her husband of 54 years, Thomas J. Kelly.
She leaves a daughter, Susan Archer and her husband Frank of Jacksonville; sisters Gwendolyn Chapman of Mystic; Marilyn "Muggs" Bufkin of New Mexico; brother Prentiss Grimes of Waterford; a grandson Cliff Archer; and several nieces and nephews.

Prentis McGary Grimes of Waterford, lost his determined battle against cancer on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016.
Prent was born at home, on Nov. 7, 1939, to Russell and Cornelia (Avery) Grimes. He grew up in Waterford attending local schools.
He was a familiar sight around the Oswegatchie area, whether tending yards, enjoying pizza or visiting friends. Prent was proud of his firehouse membership and especially his participation with the fire police.
Prent loved nothing better than sitting on his deck watching out over the river with Penny, his beloved dachshund, by his side or sometimes on his lap. Penny missed very few trips in Prent's truck. The river and his faithful sidekick were a constant source of enjoyment for him over the years.
He leaves behind his nieces, Gwen Ann Joseph, her husband, Richard, Susan Archer, Michelle Edwards and Payton Edwards; in addition to many cousins.
Prent was predeceased by his sisters, Gwendolyn Chapman, Beverly Kelly and most recently Marilyn (Muggs) Bufkin in January of this year.
The family wishes to thank Dr. David Thompson and dedicated staff, and his home caregivers, especially Roberta. Also heartfelt thanks to the Center for Hospice Care staff who worked tirelessly to keep him comfortable. If there are angels among us, our family has been blessed in knowing Sharon Schaffer of Hospice. She was so special to our uncle. Thank you to Mark Davies, Chet McNeil and Prent's neighbors for their friendship and helpful ways over the years.
A graveside service in Jordan Cemetery will be held at a date and time to be announced in the spring.
