William Adams
William Adams Sr., age 89, of 12 Burgess Place, Groton, died peacefully on Monday morning, April 24, 2006 surrounded by his family at the Groton Regency.
He was born in New London on Aug. 16,1916, the son of Robert J. and Alida Vincent Adams. He fell in love and married Isabell Doyle on June 21, 1936. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this June.
Bill worked for 38 years at Electric Boat Co. as a general foreman for quality control. During his employment he traveled to Idaho to work on the first nuclear powered submarine, "The Nautilus" and he also traveled to Saratoga Springs to work on the second nuclear powered submarine, "The Seawolf". He was a past foreman and life member of the Pioneer Hose Company in Groton and a charter and life member of the Groton Lodge of Elks and a member of Sacred Heart Church.
After his retirement in 1976 he and Isabell enjoyed traveling around the world, Hawaii being one of their favorites. They enjoyed wintering in San Diego with their daughter Barbara. Bill's hobbies included woodworking, gardening and sports. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Most of all he enjoyed life and spending time with his family.
During his stay at the Groton Regency he was loved and well cared for by the staff.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, William Adams Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Westerly; his daughter, Barbara Robinson, of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren, Debbie Camberos and her husband Jaime, of California, Sheryl Champlin and her husband, Harry, of Mystic, Kristin Partosan and her husband, Scott, of Mystic and William Adams III, of Stonington; and four great-grandchildren, Jaime, Tiana, Chelsae and Ryan. Bill also leaves a brother, Francis and his wife, Virginia Adams; two sisters, Janette and her husband, Roland Swanson, and Betty Mason. He also is survived by three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Weinberg, Lucy Doyle and Jane Doyle as well as several nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by two brothers, Vincent and Robert Adams; and a sister, Vera Cortnoir.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Dr., Groton. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New London. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.
