Walter J. Comstock III
SPRINGFIELD ? Walter Jabez Comstock III, 70, formerly of Athens, died Nov. 17, 2001, at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend.
Mr. Comstock was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Essex, Conn., the son of Walter J. II and Elizabeth I. (Bannister) Comstock.
He attended schools in Essex and Deep River, Conn.
He owned and operated the Benner & Comstock Hardware Lumber Store and Contracting in Chester until the early 1970s. Following the sale of the business to his partner, he became self-employed as a contractor in the Athens, area, retiring in 1990.
He married Doris Heidtmann on June 13, 1953 in East Hadlyme, Conn. She died in 1986. He married Lillian T. Guidi Comstock on Oct. 10, 1986, in Essex, Conn.
He was a life member of King Solomon Temple Lodge of Bellows Falls and the Bellows Falls Elks Club. He served in the U.S. Armyduring the Koreanconflict and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He served as assistant coach for American Legion Post 37 baseball team and helped transport the players to games for many years.
He was a former member of the Precision Valley Square Dancers.
He was a volunteer fireman, a selectman for many years and a former trustee of the Christian Community Church, all in Athens.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Wendy L. Comstock of Bellows Falls, Doreen C. Hobson of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Jean Crum of Saxtons River; two sons, Jeffrey A. Comstock of Saxtons River and Kirk O. Comstock of Bellows Falls; two brothers, Robert and Richard Comstock of Old Lyme, Conn.; three sisters, Elizabeth West of Westbrook, Conn., Nancy Desnoyers of Chester, Conn., and Sally LeClair of Old Lyme, Conn.; five stepchildren, Glen Guidi of Hadlyme, Conn., Joseph Guidi of Deep River, Conn., Paula Merrow of Middletown, Conn., John Guidi of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Gina Sopneski of Deep River, Conn., and 13 grandchildren.
The funeral service will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Grace Cottage Hospital, in care of Drs. Robert Backus and Moss Linder, Townshend, 05353.
The Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls is in charge of arrangements.
