Virginia Speckman
Virginia R. Speckman, 93, of Port Byron, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at Forest Hill Health & Rehab Center, East Moline.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Anyone wishing to attend the internment should gather at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron, by 9:30 a.m. Monday. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice Foundation or the Port Byron Congregational Church, where she was a member.
Virginia Riley Purinton was born Oct. 1, 1914, in Moline, the daughter of Rolla G. and Hazel M. Riley Purinton. Virginia graduated from Moline High School in 1932. She attended Augustana College and graduated from Rockford College in 1936. She attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in graphic arts under the direction of Grant Wood. She toured Europe to study art in England, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
She taught at the universities of South Dakota, Maryville, Tenn., and Burlington, Iowa. She taught art and French until the time of her marriage to her childhood sweetheart, H. Keith Speckman, on June 5, 1946 in Moline. They moved to Port Byron, where they built their home and raised their two daughters.
In 1963, the Little Flower Shop owned by Keith and Virginia became the first full-service florist in Port Byron, serving the entire area of upper Rock Island County and continuing in business until 2000.
She belonged to the former Elsie Chapter of Eastern Star, Rose Lodge. She was a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International and supported her husband's activities in the rotary.
Survivors include her husband; daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Pierre Habis, Slidell, La., Karen and Allen Dippel, Davenport; grandson, Carl (Tresa) Habis, Center Point, Ore.; granddaughter, Angelique Habis, San Francisco, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Joan Speckman, Port Byron; a niece, Margie; nephew, Marcus. She was preceded in death by her parents.
