Golden Valley: The funeral service for Vera Ellen Dobbs was conducted by Rev. Bill Broughton on Monday, April 1, 1996 at St. Paul's United Church, Golden Valley. Dora Murphy played organ and Pauline Beatty sang, "In The Garden" and shared memories of Aunt Vera.
Mrs. Dobbs died peacefully at Lady Isabelle Nursing Home, Trout Creek, Friday, March 29, 1996 in her 83rd year. Vera (McConnell) was predeceased by her husband, Herbert John Dobbs (1956).
Loving mother of Berton Dobbs (wife Lucille), Callander, Noreen Reeves (husband Dallas), Mississauga, Judy Smith (Barry), Prince George, BC. Dear sister of Ida Howe, Corbeil, Merville McConnell, Powassan, Myrtle Ransome, Parry Sound, Clarence McConnell, Corbeil. Predeceased by her sisters, Edith Lamb and Laura Dobbs, and brothers Alex, Harvey, Milton and Melville McConnell. Loving grandmother of Stephen Landon, Heather (Landon) Beatty, James Landon, Bradley Dobbs, Kenneth Reeves, Gregory Reeves, Tammy (Smith) Gulevich and Barbara (Smith) Nimchuk, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Vera was born to Charles and Ellen (Swalwell) McConnell at Hotham, Ontario. She attended Hotham Public School, until age 15, when she went to work first in Loring and then for Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Shortland in Golden Valley. Vera and Herbert Dobbs of Golden Valley were married October 4, 1933 and they operated the family homestead farm. Vera also cared for her widowed father-in-law until his death in 1942.
Vera and Herb were very involved in their community, belonging to church, school and social groups - U.C.W., W.I., L.O.L., L.O.B.A., Argyle Lions and the Hockey Association. After Herb's death in 1956, Vera continued to farm as well as work at local lumber camps and tourist resorts until moving to Toronto in 1961. There she peformed domestic work and soon found her assistance was in great demand.
In 1966, she was employed full-time by Bill & Donna (Paul) Streit, and daughter Julie, at their residences in (Bayview) Toronto and Stouffville. She remained with them until 1976, when she went to live with Noreen, Dallas and family in Mississauga. Vera continued to work locally until retiring in 1978.
Vera returned to the north, living in South River from 1983 - 1988, then was the first residence in "The Pines", Powassan. She resided there until her stroke in April, 1991, and has since resided at Lady Isabelle Nursing Home, Trout Creek. Vera enjoyed sharing her life with family and friends, especially at her cottage on Lake Nipissing.
Casket bearers for Mrs. Dobbs were Jim Landon, Glen McConnell, Paul, Brad, Bryon and Murray Dobbs. Spring interment Golden Valley Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan.
