He studied engineering at M.I.T. before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was part of the first group of Marines to guard the Mayport Naval Base in 1939, and later served in the Pacific theater of WW II as an Amtrak operator, ultimately earning the rank of Drill Sergeant. Soon after arriving in Mayport he met native Marjorie Messmore, and they married in 1941. Upon returning from the Pacific theater 'Todd' and Marge lived in Mayport and the Beaches. His work in the construction industry led to the formation of A.J. Todd Construction Company in 1966. Todd's company built many projects for the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine, including Prince of Peace, St. John the Baptist and Holy Spirit churches, major additions to Bishop Kenny High School and St. Paul's elementary school (Jax Beach), and the shrine at San Jose, as well as many other military, commercial and industrial buildings in the area. Todd and Marge were very active in St. Paul's Catholic Church and school, helping with every fundraiser and carnival. Todd had several passions. He was particularly fond of performing in comedic variety shows. Another passion was golf, which he enjoyed for 40+ years with several steadfast duffer friends. Yet another favorite hobby was RV'ing. He and Marge traveled extensively in the U.S. as well as to UF football games and with the SunWheelers throughout Florida. He also developed his artistic painting skills later in life. He won first place in the 1st Mayport & All That Jazz art festival in 1981, and was twice awarded the coveted Grumbacher Award. He was a member of the Beaches Art Guild for many years. His other passion was family, and he was an excellent husband, father and role model. Todd is predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie, and his sister Harriet Matson of Fitchburg, MA. He is survived by daughters Lynelle Duval of Jacksonville and Suzanne Cooper (Stephen) of Tampa; granddaughters Sara Cooper of Tampa and Jillie Duval of Jacksonville; one niece, several nephews and many other cousins and friends. The family will greet friends for a visitation from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens, 850 St. Johns Bluff Rd., N. (904-641-9755).
