Elderly Nipissing resident is drowned
POWASSAN (Staff)— William James King of R.R. 1 in Nipissing Township lost his life Sunday afternoon because of a leaky boat and the inability to swim.
A spokesman fur the Powassan detachment of the Provincial Police said that Mr. King and a friend Albert Hutchens of Weston Ont. set off across Duncan Lake which is about 8 miles from the village of Nipissing They were using an old wooden rowboat.
While on the return trip from a mine shaft they wanted to see, the boat which had taken on water since the beginning of the trip, finally sank about 100 yards from the shore.
Mr. King disappeared under the waves while Mr. Hutchens, who is a poor swimmer, managed to make it back to shore.
With the help of his wife Frances, he was able to pull Mr. King to the shore and apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but it was too late.
An ambulance rushed the man to the Civic Hospital in North Bay but the 70-year-old man was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. Investigating officer Const D J Warwick said there would be no inquest into the tragedy.
Coroner Dr Harold Wallace said that death was the result of drowning. Involved in mill work and lumbering most of his life, (Continued on Page 3)
