Garfield Dunleavy, 73, retired longtime employee of Automatic Electric Ltd. (AEL Microtel), died at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital on Saturday afternoon, March 19, after being a patient for the past two days, but in failing health for the last two years. His home was at 17 Sevenoaks Avenue.
Eldest son of a well-known local family, James Garfield Dunleavy, Jr., was born in Brockville on December 3, 1909, a son of the late James Garfield Dunleavy and the former Mabel Frances Polley, and was raised and educated here, attending public schools and BCI.
He had worked in the office of Smart's Foundry for some time, then in 1936 went to England where he met his wife, the former Evelyn Stuart-Potter, whom he married there in 1938.
They returned to Brockville in 1940 and Mr. Dunleavy began working at Phillips Electric, then transferred to Automatic Electric in the early 1950s. He was set-up man for the punch press until his retirement eight years ago.
He was keenly interested in duplicate bridge, being a member of the ABCL bridge club league, and enjoyed playing tournaments throughout the district several times a week. He continued to play a few hands until recent months.
Mr. Dunleavy also enjoyed photography, taking pictures of the outdoors and his family, developing his own prints.
Besides his wife, he leaves one son, Garfield (Garry) Dunleavy of Ottawa, and two grandchildren, Nick and Marty; four brothers and three sisters, Mrs. James Sheridan (Helen) of Brockville, William Dunleavy of RR 3, Brockville, Laurence Dunleavy of Brockville, Earl and Patrick Dunleavy, both of Kingston, Mrs. Stella Bradley and Mrs. Eugene Picotte (Margaret) of Brockville, and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Russell and Jim Dunleavy.
The funeral service was held in the Johnston-Barclay Funeral Chapel, 68 King Street East, on Monday afternoon at two o'clock with Rev. Ron Pierce, of St. John's United Church, officiating. Interment followed in Oakland Cemetery.
