Entered Hospital in Esquimalt Wednesday, Died During the Afternoon

News of the death of Petty Officer Robert Edward (Bob) Dunleavy, 35, R.C.N., in naval hospital in Esquimalt, B.C., Wednesday came as a shock to his family and friends here. A veteran of the Navy during the past 10 years, P/O Dunleavy had been stationed on the west coast recently after completing a tour of the Pacific and the China coast.
Apparently in good health, P/O Dunleavy was taken suddenly ill Wednesday morning according to information cabled to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Dunleavy, 32 Georgina Street. The telegram received here during the noon hour stated that he was "dangerously ill" from a severe abdominal condition. .... evening they received a further telegram stating that he had passed away suddenly, with cause of death not diagnosed.
Petty Officer Dunleavy was born in Brockville 35 years ago, a son of James Garfield Dunleavy and his wife, the former Mabel Polley, of Brockville. He had attended the local public schools and collegiate before entering the bakery trade. He went to Hamilton, Ont., prior to the outbreak of World War II and it was while he was there that he enlisted in the R.C.N.V.R. in 1939. He served throughout the conflict on Atlantic convoy ships of the Canadian Navy, taking part also in the channel operations on "D" Day. At the cessation of hostilities, he remained in the navy, being transferred to the west coast of Canada. During last spring he was on the H.M.C.S. "Crescent' along the China coast when Canadians were being evacuated from that country. Recently he had been posted to shore duty His death was a shocking blow to his parents because of his apparent good health. He was one of seven sons who served in the Canadian forces during the war.
P/O Dunleavy was an extremely active young man and had a personality that won him many friends.
He was a Baptist in religion and a member of the First Baptist church here.
Surviving to mourn his loss, in addition to his parents, are three sisters, Mrs. James Sheridan, Brockville, Miss Stella Dunleavy, nurse-in-training, Toronto, and Miss Margaret Dunleavy, at home; seven brothers, Garfield, James, Lawrence, Patrick, Russell, of Brockville, William, of Iroquois, and Earl, of Toronto.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed but the remains will be conveyed to Brockville for burial.
