| 169 |  | Death Of An Old Citizen Death of an Old Citizen,- We have to announce to day the death of one of the pioneer settlers of old Bytown, Mr. Anthony Swalwell, senior, Civil Engineer, father of Mr. A. Swalwell, undertaker. Mr. Swalwell first came to the Ottawa country in 1825, having been sent up to Bytown by the Court of Queen's Bench of L'Orignal to survey a road from that place to the Rideau, and from Bytown to Long Island. He landed from a canoe with his staff of men where the locks were subsequently built, and he proceeded to locate the Montreal road and the road up the Rideau River to Long Island locks. In 1829 he came to reside in Bytown in the employ of the Ordnance Department under Col. By, and he assisted at the building of the Rideau Canal. He has seen Bytown grow from a collection of small shanties to its present proud position, and he has witnessed the transformation of the Ottawa Valley from a wilderness into a populous and prosperous country. As a surveyor he had an extensive practice in the surrounding counties. In his younger days, but he has not done any work for several years past. Mr. Swalwell was seventy six years of age, and his death will be sincerely regretted by many of the old residents. --Ottawa Daily Citizen, Ottawa, Ontario, July 20, 1874 Page 4 | |

Clarence Moore died this afternoon at one o'clock at the home of his sister at the east end of Twenty-third street after a brief illness of only a week. The disease was peritonitis. He leaves a father and mother, who were with him through his sickness, a brother and two sisters. The funeral services will be at the Trinity Methodist church, on Sunday, March 18, at 11 o'clock a. m. Clarence A. Moore was a young man of great promise, barely nineteen years of age, having been born Jan. 1879. For two winters past he has been a pupil at the Up to Date school, and during the present term he had been preparing for examination for the civil service. He was an exceptionally bright and lovable boy and by his gentlemanly bearing and kindly, considerate disposition had the respect and affection of his fellow students and all who came in contact with him. Clarence was an earnest, manly Christian and thus his untimely taking off is not without x ray of consolation. The utmost sympathy of the community will go out to the members of the stricken family. | 172 |  | Death of Mrs. Ella B. Dutton, a Resident of Pavilion Pavilion, March S.-The death of Mrs. Ella B. Dutton, widow of Walter Dutton, occurred this afternoon at 1:15 o'clock, at the home of J. C. Annis on North Lake street, of kidney and heart trouble. Mrs Dutton had been in poor health since early winter and some weeks ago came to live with her sister, Mrs. J. C. Annis. She was born in Sandwich, DeKalb County, III, October 1, 1861, and was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Ambrose Ladd. On July 24, 1884, she was united in marriage to Walter Dutton, whose tragic death took place July 29, 1902, from the injuries received by being caught in a binder while cutting wheat. The team ran away and his body was terribly mangled. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Dutton lived for a few years on the Dutton homestead, west of Pavilion. The next two years were spent in California, after which they returned to Pavilion and lived on what is known as the Ely Rogers farm. She is survived by one brother, Warren Ladd, of Greigsville, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Adell Millory, of York and Mrs. J.C. Matthew Damon, the old Connecticut River pilot, was found dead in his pilot boat in the river at Brockway's Ferry yesterday afternoon. His head was hanging over the boat. Probably death was due to heart failure. He was known as one of the best pilots on the river. He had piloted many boats up to Hartford during the past thirty-five years. He was the first man to take out sailing parties from Fenwick many years ago, in the old yacht Quickstep, now owned in Hartford by members of the Hartford Yacht Club. She had been a nurse at CVPH Medical Center, Dr. William Ladue, Fletcher Allen, Val Haven in Peru and later Lake Champlain Primary Care in Plattsburgh. Debbie enjoyed arts, crafts, photography, painting, snow mobiling, flower gardening, spending time at her cabin and mostly her family. She was predeceased by her father, Larry Worley; her stepfather, Morris D. "Papa" Monette; and a sister, Jacqueline Worley. Deb is survived by her companion, Jack E. Harris Jr. of West Chazy; her mother, Barbara Monette of Beekmantown; her daughter, Nina Fritz and her companion Jamie Duprey of Plattsburgh; son William "Bill" Fritz and his wife Kyrsten of Plattsburgh; two grandchildren, Taylor Gohlke and Caleb Fritz; Chuck Worley and his companion Tina of West Chazy; two stepbrothers, Carl Monette and his wife Missy of Plattsburgh, Mark Monette and his wife Beverly of Chazy; Lori Manor and her husband David of Altona, Tina Monette of Plattsburgh; several nieces and nephews. Born in Douglas, Ontario, he was a son of the late R. Joseph. and H. Mabel (Francis) Wolsey. Don was a veteran of the Second World War, he was a flight engineer and flew Canso Antisubmarine Aircraft between Iceland and England ahead of convoys. He later sold Fuller Brush and Rawleigh products and retired as a Commissionaire at Acadia University, Wolfville. Don wrote two books: "A Canadian Speaks Out" and " A Canadian Speaks Out 2nd. Edition Plus". Mrs. South died at Civic Hospital, North Bay, after a lengthy illness, on Tuesday, August 14, 1991, in her 63rd year. Doris (Grawbarger), beloved wife of William (Bill) Alfred South, Callander. Loving mother of Donna Maier, Sault Ste. Marie; Robert South (wife June), North Bay; William South (wife Betty), Callander; Kenneth South (wife Lorraine), Sault Ste. Marie; Karen (husband Ifeany Emesowum), London. Dear sister of Art Grawbarger (wife Myrtle), Callander. Loving grandmother of 12 grandchildren. Predeceased by her brother Bruce and parents Sam and Eliza Grawbarger. Doris Grawbarger was born in North Bay and grew up on her parent's farm in Nipissing Township. She met Bill South and they were married on December 27, 1944 at Nipissing United Church. Doris worked with Kern's Jewellers from 1964 to 1974 and at Woolworth's from 1974 to 1981. In 1973 Doris and Bill bought land near Hornepayne where they peeled the logs and built a cabin that could only be reached by canoe. Here Doris loved fishing and hunting, just recently shooting a bull moose by herself. After a long battle with her illness Doris died peacefully in her sleep. Casket bearers were Gordon and Ronnie Grawbarger, Dennis Johnston, Kevin South, Ifeany Emesowum and Rocco Muratore. Born in 1923 in Fort William, she attended local schools. She married Bruce Grawbarger in 1943 who predeceased her in 1944 while serving in W.W. II. She remarried in 1950 to Edward (Peg) O'Neil. She is survived by her children Diane (Michael) Simmons, Shaun (Lynn) O'Neil of Pass Lake, Kevin O'Neil,Colleen (Allan) Snelgrove and Kelly (Brandford) Green; eleven grandchildren: Mark (Rachell) Simmons of Yellowknife, NT, Tracey (Joseph) Schenck of St. Catherines, ON, Tevecca (Paul) Flowers of Edmonton, AB, Shannon and Megan O'Neil of Pass Lake, Courtney and Jesse O'Neil, Stephanie and Kimberlee Snelgrove and Trevor and Kaitlin Green and 4 great grandchildren. Also surviving are stepchildren Pat (Peter) Hnatiw and Fay (Norman) MacIntosh of Sault Ste. Marie and daughter-in-law Brenda O'Neil of Montreal, Quebec as well as numerous other relatives. Predeceased by her parents Harry and Jessie Stokes,first husband Bruce and second Husband Peg in 1978; brothers Bill, Ray and Sam Stokes; sisters Bessie Cliff and Mabel Hamilton; stepchildren Barbara Pappas and Brian O'Neil and son-in-laws John Pappas and Ron Goose. After her children were raised, she trained as a Nurse's Aid and worked at Walter P. Hogarth Hospital for several years and later Red Cross Homemaking. First and foremost was Doris's love for her family. Special occasions that brought the family together meant the world to her. Doris led a full life right up to her passing. She was well known at the nursing homes as 'Giggles' the clown, where she entertained residents with the Elks Klown Band with her dancing and singing. Mom's love for her family, friends and music kept her going through some very difficult times in her life. Hilda (nee Smith) was predeceased by her husband Irvin Elsworth Byers (1917-1997). She was the loving mother of Barbara Ellen Byers Bradley (Harold) of Warman, Saskatchewan and Robert Irvin Byers (Barbara Anne) of Callander, Ontario. She was the proud and loving grandmother of Jo-Anne Barber (Glen), David Snoddon (Danni), Lisa Drinkwalter (Trent), Jamie Byers, Ken Byers (Tracy), Michael Byers (Dawn) and 10 great-grandchildren. Hilda was the dear sister of the late Herbert Smith (Evelyn), Ken Smith of Callander (Joan, deceased) and the late Elmer Smith (Edna, deceased). The Byers family will receive visitors at the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan (705-724-2024) on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 am with the Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 am. | 196 | | Doug Edmonstone Doug passed away very suddenly on Friday, February 25, 2022 at the age of 69. Born in Owen Sound on April 18, 1952, he was the devoted son of Lyle and June Edmonstone (nee Showell) of Waterloo. He was the beloved husband of Ruth Edmonstone for over 45 years. They lived their married life in Wasaga Beach, Thornbury, and most recently, Meaford. Together they raised three wonderful children; Brent, Shaun (Nicole) all from Thornbury, and Robyn (Kent) of Newmarket. He was a special Papa to granddaughters; Hanna, Alivia, Mabel, Dalilah, Violet, Ellie and Charlotte and fondly remembered by Alexa Jackson, mother to Mabel and Dalilah. Doug was the dear brother of Brad, Brian, Danny, Jessica, Nancy and Sue, and brother-in-law to Doug Radkey and predeceased by sister-in-law, Kathleen. He will be fondly remembered by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Doug retired from Blue Mountain Resorts ‘Monterra Golf’ in December, 2020. He cared deeply for those who loved him and was always willing to lend a helping hand and was known as the man who could fix or build anything. He was passionate about his Harley motorcycle, original rock and roll, meticulous about his garage and home maintenance. He was always full of stories, laughter, and kindness and really took the time to listen and encourage those he loved. His smile could light up the room. Doug was a proud former Kinsmen and he and Ruth enjoyed socializing with friends and family and would do anything to help a friend. Doug’s family extends their sincere gratitude to their many friends and family who have been so supportive throughout this very difficult time. Cremation has taken place and a private funeral service will be conducted. | 197 | | Douglas Price WEST BALDWIN- Douglas Arthur Price, C.C.C., born in Massena, N.Y., September 7, 1943 to George and Mary Price who named him after Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Douglas passed away on January 15, 2021; he is predeceased by his parents as well as his only brother, Richard Price. Mr. Price graduated from Massena Central High School in 1961. He began his cooking career for Valle's Steakhouses that were once located along the eastern coast. Later on, he worked as a Dunkin Donuts baker for ten years but baking could not keep him from returning to a full service kitchen. For the next ten years, Doug worked for Marriott Food Services at Merrimac College in Andover, Mass. His professional development was strengthened by meeting Julia Child in her kitchen at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. The American Culinary Federation recognized Mr. Price as a Certified Chef de Cuisine, and in 1998, Chef Price was named Chef of the Year by his New Hampshire chapter of ACF Professional Chefs. In his early retirement, Chef Price worked for the school lunch program at Salem High School, Salem, N.H., did consulting for other school systems, and was a private caterer. After living in N.H. for 44 years, Doug retired again in 2012 to live in W. Baldwin, Me. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jackie(Parker)Price of W. Baldwin; son, Shawn Douglas and Christine(Taylor)Price of Salem, N. H.; two granddaughters, Allison Rene Price of Greenland, N.H. and Jillian Leigh Price of Nashua, N.H.; one great granddaughter, Aaliyah Alexandria Rondeau. Cooking was his life, and for Doug to see hungry people standing in long lines to get food greatly disturbed him. A donation in his name to your favorite food bank would be an honorable tribute. His final rites of passage were private and burial will be in the spring. | |

| 199 | | Dr. Ira Coller Word was received here Sunday morning of the death of DR.IRA COLLER, who died at his home in Detroit at an early hour Sunday morning. Deceased was a native of Lenawee county, having been born in Macon in 1865. His childhood and early youth were spent at the home with his parents. Several years ago he entered the medical college in Detroit, taking a full course. Since his graduation he has remained in Detroit, where he had established a large practice. Some time ago DR. COLLER was taken ill with blood poisoning, which was the direct cause of his death, he never entirely recovered from its effects. DR. IRA COLLER was a man with a genial disposition, a most companionable gentlemen, and was popular with all men. His demise causes much sorrow among his many friends. The funeral was held at the home in Detroit at 7 o'clock Monday evening, and the remains were brought here this morning at 10:41, accompanied by the immediate family. The body was taken to Macon, where the funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home where his boyhood days were spent. Burial will occur there also. | |
