| 414 |  | Friends found victim's body Friends found victim's body Two family friends found the body of Calvin Rich on the surface of Lake Nosbonsing Monday morning, Ontario Provincial Police confirmed Tuesday. After being notified of the location of the 34-year-old victim from Rutherglen, members of an OPP marine unit went out and recovered the body of Rich, who had fallen out of a fishing boat on the evening of Aug. 28. The body was found at about 8:30 a.m. Monday in the middle of the lake, in front of Sunnyside Campground, said OPP Constable Darryl Foulkes, lead investigator in the incident. "The body was recovered, was identified as Calvin Rich and was taken up to the (North Bay) Psychiatric Hospital for a postmortem," he said. The OPP said foul play is not suspected, but the investigation is continuing. Police are also awaiting the report of the coroner, and the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto is conducting related tests. OPP divers searched for Rich on Aug. 29, 30 and 31, with the team diving four times on its final day before being re-dispatched to another emergency elsewhere in the province, Foulkes explained. Rich fell out of the boat at 7:50 p.m. on Aug. 28, so divers, arriving later, could not begin their search that night due to darkness and poor visibility. Dobbs GOLDEN VALLEY (Staff) - Herbert John Dobbs, one of the communities most popular citizens, died June 30 in a North Bay hospital. Mr. Dobbs was in his 46th year. Rev. Brampton of the United Church conducted services at the home, the church and the graveside. Members of the Argyle Lions Club held a memorial service and the Loyal Orange Lodge members held a graveside service. Pallbearers were Edward Diamond and Fred Hinchberger, Lions members; Bert Drive and Leo Driver, LOL members; and Oliver Towns and Wendel Moore of the United Church board. Mr. Dobbs had taken an active part in all three organizations. Mr. Dobbs enjoyed music. He organized and led an orchestra for the past 20 years. Mr. Dobbs was born November 11, 1910, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William John Dobbs. He was a lifelong resident of the community. His marriage to the former Vera Ellen McConnell of Nipissing took place October 4, 1933. He is survived by his wife; a son, Berton, 21; Noreen, 17; Judy, 11, all at home. | 424 |  | Garfield Dunleavy, 73 Garfield Dunleavy, 73 Garfield Dunleavy, 73, retired longtime employee of Automatic Electric Ltd. (AEL Microtel), died at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital on Saturday afternoon, March 19, after being a patient for the past two days, but in failing health for the last two years. His home was at 17 Sevenoaks Avenue. Eldest son of a well-known local family, James Garfield Dunleavy, Jr., was born in Brockville on December 3, 1909, a son of the late James Garfield Dunleavy and the former Mabel Frances Polley, and was raised and educated here, attending public schools and BCI. He had worked in the office of Smart's Foundry for some time, then in 1936 went to England where he met his wife, the former Evelyn Stuart-Potter, whom he married there in 1938. They returned to Brockville in 1940 and Mr. Dunleavy began working at Phillips Electric, then transferred to Automatic Electric in the early 1950s. He was set-up man for the punch press until his retirement eight years ago. He was keenly interested in duplicate bridge, being a member of the ABCL bridge club league, and enjoyed playing tournaments throughout the district several times a week. He continued to play a few hands until recent months. Mr. Dunleavy also enjoyed photography, taking pictures of the outdoors and his family, developing his own prints. Besides his wife, he leaves one son, Garfield (Garry) Dunleavy of Ottawa, and two grandchildren, Nick and Marty; four brothers and three sisters, Mrs. James Sheridan (Helen) of Brockville, William Dunleavy of RR 3, Brockville, Laurence Dunleavy of Brockville, Earl and Patrick Dunleavy, both of Kingston, Mrs. Stella Bradley and Mrs. Eugene Picotte (Margaret) of Brockville, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Russell and Jim Dunleavy. He was a 1935 graduate of San Pedro High School, a lifeguard at Cabrillo Beach, and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. George worked at McCowan's Market for many years and then was employed by Matson until his retirement. He was a member & past President of the Los Angeles Harbor Shrine, a 32nd Degree Mason Lodge #332, a Marine Square, and an Elk. Survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Dennis (Julie); daughter, Denise (Ray) Jones; grandchildren, Kimberly, Todd and Ken; 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Rosalie (Ivan) Morriss and Dorothy (Gordon) Milliken; former wife, Mildred Hamilton; stepsons, Mark, Michael and Mitchell (Charlene) Zankich. | 445 |  | George Quick QUICK The body of George Wesley Quick, age 67, of Richmond, and formerly Staunton, was found Wednesday in Chesterfield County. He had been missing since October 26, 1984. Mr. Quick was graduated from McKinley High School, Washington, D.C. and later attended Virginia Commonwealth University. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. For a number of years he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Staunton, and upon retirement moved to Richmond, where he was employed part time as an interior decorator with the J.C. Penney Co. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Staunton. Surviving are a son, Allen W. Quick and a granddaughter, Deborah Lynn Quick, both of Staunton; a close friend, Katherine Armstrong Quick of Staunton; two sisters, Esther Quick Candage of Scotia, N. Y. and Ruth Quick Dinan of Florence, Arz.; one niece, Jean Mason Outhout of Westfield, Vermont; one nephew, Ralph Mason of Scotia, N.Y. A Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Hamrick Funeral Home, Staunton. | 447 |  | George W. Quick Crime of the Week The last time George Wesley Quick, 67, was seen alive was about 4:30 in the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 26. Quick left his job in Cloverleaf Mall and vanished. The next day his car was found in the 3300 block of Meadowdale Boulevard. He was listed with police as a missing person, but the police had few leads They did however suspect foul play. On Jan. 30, George Quick’s body was found in woods off Dalebrook Drive He was found partly clothed; the body was in a decomposed state. A joint investigation by state and county police has been conducted, but the case remains unsolved. | 448 |  | George W. Stevens GEORGE W. STEVENS ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. / Richmond - George W. Stevens, 59, formerly of Richmond, passes away unexpectedly as a result of a motorcycle accident on Dec. 21, 2002, in Palm Beach, Fla. George was born to Heman Henderson Stevens and Gladys Walton Stevens of Huntington on Sept. 27, 1943. He was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine Casey Stevens of Richmond in February of 1985; his brother, Heman, of Florence, Mass.; and by his brothers, Donald and Richard, of Huntington. He is survived by two brothers, Harold of Hardwick and Roger of Richmond; and three sisters, Dottie Blish and Rita Bradley of Huntington, and Gerry Hallock of Essex. He leaves numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. George is also survived by his children, Stephanie Stevens of San Diego, Calif., Jason Stevens of Dallas, Texas, and Casey (and Colleen Jackson) Stevens of Essex, and Colby (and Dawne Place) Stevens of Essex Junction. He is looking down upon his five grandchildren, Cody Jason and Cassandra June of Dallas, Jacob Taylor and Lauren Nancy of Essex Junction, and newborn Allison Lorraine Theresa, whom he was very excited to meet. George served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman, spending some time in France, Germany, Belgium and Spain, among other places. After returning from service, he worked at Vermont Heating and Ventilating for a few years. He then owned and ran "Steve's Place", a restaurant and bar in Richmond from the late 70s to 80s, and then worked at Rossignol for a short time. Later, he was employed at IBM in Essex Junction as a facilities maintenance technician until the mid 90s. Although he always had plenty of fun at work, people would find themselves hard-pressed to remember George ever taking any sick time. He always believed that if you could make it to your feet, then you had no business calling yourself sick. He belonged to several fraternal organizations, including Patriot Lodge 33, F & AM, Hinesburg, the Elks and the VFW. From the late 90s, George owned a camp on Lake Morey in Fairlee, where he loved to entertain since it was right on the water and only a short jaunt from the Lake Morey Country club. Although he loved motorcycling, swimming, playing horseshoes, shooting pool and occasionally going fishing, his three most favorite things after visiting with family and friends were golfing, playing cards, and picking on everyone relentlessly. He played in the World Championship of Poker in Las Vegas, and won trophies playing cards and golf locally. If there were awards for pushing people's buttons, nobody would have bothered holding a tournament, since George was a shoe-in. Not surprising, given his interests, George had an uncanny knack for numbers, and for reading people. Beneath his rough exterior was a heart of gold, but he'd fight tooth and nail to make sure only a select few ever found out. To say that George was quite a character is an enormous understatement; to those that knew him well, no explanation is necessary. to those that didn't, no explanation is possible. Among his accomplishments, though, what we are most proud of George for is the way he carried on and never gave up when his wife, Lorraine, passed away. It would have been easy to fold up, cave in, and make excuses, but he never did. He dug in deep, raised his kids, and made sure that they got through school. We know, by his example, that he would want us all to carry on the same way, in order to make him proud. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 28, at 10 a.m. in the Richmond Congregational Church. Burial will take place in the spring. Visiting hours are Friday, Dec. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Gifford Funeral Home, 22 Depot St., Richmond. Walton George Washington Walton, son of George and Louisa Walton, was born in Keene, Essex county, N.Y. on October 27, 1861, and spent the greater part of his life in the Adirondacks. On September 30, 1874 he was married to Susan Ellis McClelland of Saranac Lake. For several years his chief occupation was that of a contractor and builder. Numerous summer hotels and other public buildings remain as lasting tribute to his skill, among them the Blue Mountain Lake House and the Keene Center public library. His many friends in the Ausable Valley will best remember him in the years when he maintained a wheelwright shop in Keene Center and took a leading part in the affairs of the town, holding such offices as justice, notary and school director. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1916 he sold his eastern property and joined his wife and five of his children in Oregon, where he purchased a home. After the death of his wife in 1924, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. R.D. Barton of Salem, Oregon, until his death on August 30, 1928. On September 3, he was laid to rest beside his life-long companion in Jason Lee Mission cemetery at Salem, Oregon. His only brother, Christopher M. Walton, died at Rochester, N.Y., in April of the present year. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. George W. Quick, 17th and Eye Streets, N.W., Washington D.C.; H.H.
