| 507 |  | Hazle R. Smith HAZLE R. SMITH WINOOSKI - Hazle Ruth (Knight) Smith, 77, of Winooski died peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007. She was born on Sept. 20, 1929, in Albany, N.Y., the daughter of the late William and Hazel (Walton) Knight. Hazle lived in Vermont, New York and Massachusetts all of her life. She was an avid reader and enjoyed both crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She had a love for red roses and enjoyed playing poker as well as a variety of other card games. She was a champion at dominos. Hazle was predeceased by her husband, Rolon Earl Smith, in 1979 and her son Rikki Emory Smith in 2001. She is survived by her son Rolon Eli Smith of Starksboro and her daughter Rise E. Berard of Winooski. She also leaves her grandchildren, Chuckie Wein, Rolinda Goodrich Rocque and her fianc Alex Gedutis, Regina Williams and her husband Randy. Rise A. Berard-Daniels and her husband Scott, Chantel A. Berard, David A.J. Berard, Allana M. Berard and her companion Dana Cota. Marie R. Smith, Robin E. | 511 | | Helen Elizabeth Fenlon Fenlon, Helen It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Helen Fenlon, in the Palliative Care unit of the Providence Care Hospital on Wednesday May 26, 2021. She is predeceased by her mother and father Helen and James Sheridan, sisters Patricia, Mary and Alice, brothers Joseph and Thomas. She is survived by her children Brian (Sherri) and Susan (Craig), grandchildren Sean, Liam and their mother Judith, Adam (Jesse), Taylor and Alexandra (Kyle) and their father Ted and great grandchildren Zoey and Thea. Helen was born and raised in Brockville, the first of six children in the Sheridan family. Helen had a long nursing career of 44 years, beginning with her graduation from the St. Joseph’s School of Nursing at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston in 1952. Her first post found her in the Operating room at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital in Brockville. She soon found her true place in the Labor and Delivery unit at St. Vincent. After moving to Kingston in 1965, she continued to work in Labor and Delivery unit at the Hotel Dieu Hospital. With changes to services at the Dieu, Helen began work on the Surgical floor (Johnson 6). She worked there until her well earned retirement in 1996. For her, nursing was more than a profession, it was a true calling. Helen resided at the Shipyard Apartments on Ontario street since 1975. She made many friends there and was involved in the organization of potluck suppers, afternoon wine socials and group dinners at local restaurants. Helen had a lifelong love of reading which she passed onto her children for which we are ever thankful. Her kitchen skills provided her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with a steady supply of pies throughout the year, pickles in the summer and shortbread cookies at Christmas. She was a prolific knitter providing the younger family members with numerous pairs of mittens, scarves, hats and sweaters. She played in Ladies Bridge clubs both in Brockville and Kingston. She was member of the chorus in several musicals while in Brockville. She also curled for a number of seasons. Travels took her to Europe, the Holy Land in the Middle East as well as points south in South Carolina and Florida and west to Alberta. Books, puzzles and crosswords kept her mind sharp through the years. Helen’s was certainly a life well lived, intricately entwined with the lives of her entire family. Her presence will be sorely missed but her spirit will always be held close by each one of us. We’re okay Mom, you can rest now. Due to restrictions, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated in Helen’s memory. | |

| 513 | | Helen Thurston THURSTON, HELEN A. (LEWIS) age 90, formerly of Wethersfield Commons in Warwick was taken to a better place on Monday, March 25, 2013, after a happy and purposeful life. Born in Newport, RI she was the wife of the late Brenton P. Thurston and the daughter of the late Harold and Lena A. (Collins) Lewis. She was a graduate of St. Mary's School; St. Joseph's High School, in the last graduating class in 1940 and the Newport Secretarial School in 1941. Upon graduation she worked as a secretary for Mayor Herbert S. McCauley and during WWII she worked at the Newport Naval Torpedo Station. A Warwick resident since 1952 she was a communicant of St. William Church and also St. Francis of Assisi Church (1985-2008) both in Warwick. She was a member of the Garfield Park Woman's Club, a past President of the Wethersfield Commons Social Committee, Chairman of the Wethersfield Commons Bingo committee and an active member of Project Linus Hearts and Hands of Rhode Island, for whom she made quilts that were donated to hospitalized children in R.I. She is survived by her four children; Carolyn Penick and her husband Stephen, of Bradenton, FL; Nancy Roy and her husband Geoffrey of Warwick, RI; Lorraine Capporaletti of North Providence, RI and Brenton P. Thurston and his wife Barbara of Providence, RI; along with 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was also the sister of Mrs. Corrine Southard of Hernando, FL and the late Margaret Greene. He was born in Colchester, May 8,1928, the son of Heman H. Stevens Sr. and Gladys (Walton) Stevens. He was employed for many years at the Burke Pontiac-Cadillac dealership in Northampton as an accountant. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy. He is survived by his wife, the former Mavis Weston of Northampton; two daughters, Nancy Stevens of Hatfield and Linda Didonna of Northampton; four brothers, Donald of Huntington, Harold of Hardwick, George of Essex Junction, and Roger of Richmond; three sisters, Dortha Blish and Mrs. Paul (Rita) Bradley, both of Huntington, and Mrs. Clinton (Geraldine) Hallock of Essex Junction; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. | 520 | | Henry Hayden Accompanying the name "Henry Stokes Hayden" on the December 2, 1942, Watsonville Register-Pajaronian Roll of Honor, was the comment, "Missing in Alaska." While residing in Santa Cruz County, he enlisted as a private in the 250th Coastal Artillery National Guard. On September 16, 1940, the unit was mustered into federal service and stationed at Camp McQuaide near Watsonville. At the camp Private Hayden was trained to be a coastal artillerymen and/or "army mine planter." In order to strengthen the defense of the Alaskan coast the army ordered the 250th Coast Artillery from Camp McQuaide to the area of Sitka, Alaska in June 1941. Henry Hayden departed with his battery from San Francisco on September 12, 1941, aboard the SS Chirkof. They arrived in Seattle on September 15 and three days later, left for Alaska. During the month of September, his unit was deployed on a windswept island two miles wide and ten miles long, located seven miles across a choppy sea from Kodiak, Alaska. The circumstances behind Hayden's death are not known, but the American Battlefield Monument Commission records note that on September 19, 1941, Henry Hayden was "Missing in Action or Buried at Sea." --Remembering our own: the Santa Cruz County military roll of honor 1861-2010. | 527 | | Herbert John Dobbs HERBERT JOHN DOBBS Following a long illness, Herbert John Dobbs of Golden Valley passed away in the Civic Hospital in North Bay on June 30th, in the 46th year of his age. Mr. Dobbs was born Nov. 11, 1910, a son of the late William John Dobbs and Caroline Hart Shortland. He was a life-long resident of the community. On October 4th, 1933, Mr. Dobbs married Vera Ellen McConnell of Nipissing, and besides his wife he leaves a family of one son and two daughters - Berton, 21, Noreen, 17, and Judy 11-all at home with mother. Herb was a very popular and likeable fellow, always ready to lend a helping hand to others. He enjoyed music and he organized an orchestra of which he was the leader and played with his family for the last twenty years until June of last year, when he was stricken with his illness. He will indeed be missed. The Rev. Mr. Brampton of the United Church conducted the funeral services at the home, the church and at the graveside. The L.O.L., of which Herb had been an active member for 25 years, also had an impressive service at the graveside for their departed brother. Herb was also active in the Argyle Lions Club, and a service of remembrance was sponsored by this group too on the eve of the funeral. The funeral brought together a multitude of friends, neighbors and relatives, and the many, many floral tributes indicated the great esteem in which Herb was held, and the high regard for his family. Pall-bearers were Lions Ed. Diamond and Fred Hinchberger, Bros. Bert and Leo Driver of the L.O.L., and Oliver Towns and Wendel Moore of the United Church Board of which Herb was a member. Relatives and friends were here from Matheson, Kirkland Lake, Callander, South River, Sundridge, Vittoria, Toronto, Mount Forest, Dunchurch, Parry Sound, Blind River, Arnstein, Port Loring, Loring, Haileybury, Nipissing and Trout Creek. | 530 |  | Herman E. Klick Herman E. Klick March 11, 1913-Feb. 20, 1997 Herman E. Klick. former lead singer with the nationally known Singing Sentinels quartet, died Thursday at Heart of the Valley Care Center. He was 83. He was born in Hebron. N.D., to Conrad and Frieda (lung) Klick. He worked his way through high school and also played on a school basketball team which made the state finals. During the Depression, like many others. he rode the rails to California. He attended Modesto Junior College where he majored in music and met his wife "Billie". They were married 53 years before her death in 1989. From 1940 to 1952 he was lead singer for a the touring and recording folk quartet The Singing Sentinels. The group got its start at Kaiser Shipyards in Portland. where they sang for 743 ship launchings. In 1949 alone, the quartet made 492 appearances before live audiences, including a concert with Frank Sinatra in the Cotton Bowl, their radio audience that year was an estimated 27 million. The Klick family moved to Corvallis in 1954. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 20 years and was a soloist for various church and community programs. For the past 20 years he suffered from aphasia as the result of a stroke. He was area governor of Toastmaster International and a founding member of Adair Village chapter No. 3722 (now Oregon State Toastmasters Club). He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, OSU Beaver Club, People to People, and - while with the quartet - an honorary member of the Washington County Sheriff's Posse. He was a Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason. and a member of Mary's River Lodge. He is survived by a son, David Klick of Beaverton; daughters Joan Leslie of Tucson, Ariz., and Ginna Sloan of Tokyo, Japan; two brothers; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. | 532 | | Hilda Hersemeyer Hilda passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, February 19th 2021 at the age of 89. Hilda is survived by her husband Eugen, her children Gary and Heather (John) and her grandsons Garrett and Haydn. Born on September 1st 1931 in North Himsworth Township, Hilda was the first of nine children born to Alex and Mabel Byers. She is survived by siblings Lawrence Byers (Lila), Mervin Byers (late Ruth), Vivian McKee (Ranald), Maurice Byers (Shirley), Margaret Watson (late Dan), Thelma Byers, Lyall Byers (Eunice) and Victor Byers (Linda). Hilda was born and raised on the Byers? homestead in North Himsworth Township. Being the oldest of nine children, she helped raise many of her younger siblings and continued to be a natural caregiver throughout her life. She often happily reminisced about her childhood, including; the long walk to school from Byers Road to McDonald Road in the dead of winter, her true love of school and winning the spelling contest, one harrowing journey with Lawrence through the bush in the dark to get help from her Uncle when her dad was injured, another trek through the bush to Powassan with pig in tow, the day the huge draft horses got away, berry picking with her mom with a watchful eye for bears, and gathering wintergreens for her dad?s birthday cake every year. Growing up on the farm surrounded by a loving family set the stage for a deep and everlasting connection to her mom, dad and all her brothers and sisters. While she moved to southern Ontario to work at an early age, eventually getting married and having her two children, she always longed for home and the family moved back to her beloved northern Ontario in 1973. She was so happy to once again be close to her birth family and was able to enjoy many treasured moments with and provide support to her parents as they grew older. Like her mom before her, Hilda loved being outdoors and could often be found in the garden, doing yard work, looking for pussy willows on a country walk or picking blueberries on the blueberry rocks. She had a green thumb and ran a small greenhouse for many years that was famous for its huge tomato plants and beautiful petunias. She was a wonderful cook and not a day went by when there wasn?t fresh baked cookies or squares for her kids to snack on when they came home from school and a full course meal on the stove. That said, one of her simple pleasures in life was sitting down to a meal at a restaurant, any restaurant, because she didn?t have to do the cooking! She was an extremely hard worker with endless energy, still cleaning the house, piling wood, mowing the lawn, raking leaves and shovelling snow in her late 80?s. As much as she took care of home, she did love going places, whether it be to visit family, shop at the mall, or take a longer trip down south, further north or even to Germany. She was always more than up for family excursions, even going to Canada?s Wonderland as recently as 2019. Hilda was a deeply devoted wife, mother and grandmother and her unconditional love and support was evident every single day in both the small and the large things she did. She was definitely the glue that held the family together through all of life?s struggles, with her no-nonsense approach to problems and her unwavering dedication to her family?s welfare. Her twin grandsons were her greatest joy, with them being ever-present at the house growing up, giving her endless hugs and laughs, and leaving Lego pieces everywhere for her to step on and pick up. Even when her health was failing, Garrett and Haydn?s visits made her smile the brightest. At 89, she fought a brave battle with esophageal cancer, which was in remission at the time of her death. Blish II, 8, of Huntington at his home last Friday evening. State's Atty. John J. Boylan Jr. of Burlington said troopers and members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation were working to piece together details of the youngster's death. Was Playing on Sofa Police said they were told the boy was playing on the sofa at his home with some other youngsters between 7:20 and 7:45 p.m. Friday when he collapsed and died before a doctor arrived. Troopers said they were told the boy had fallen in the woods earlier in the day and had suffered a cut in his left shoulder that did not appear too serious. An autopsy performed Saturday by Dr. Richard S. Woodruff of Burlington, the state pathologist, revealed the boy had died of internal bleeding caused by a puncture of the main artery that carries blood to the heart. Caused by 'Instrument' Dr. Woodruff said the autopsy indicated the puncture of the artery was caused by a sharp "instrument" of some kind. He said he did not think the wound was caused by a sharp twig or similar object. "We are still trying to find out exactly how the youngster died," said Boylan. Ian was 65 years old, having been born in 1955 at the Milden Hospital. He went on to work as a millwright in Alberta, Saskatchewan and even a gold mine in Kyrgyzstan, Russia. Ian is lovingly remembered by his daughter Michele Nelson and grandchildren Kaitlyn, Kaleb, Nicholas Nelson; sisters: Dianne (Max) Oertli, Kitty (Bill) Paslawski; numerous nieces and nephews; relatives and friends in the Milden/Dinsmore/Rosetown communities.
